D4 Shutdowns due to high temps?

Anyone else experienced their D4 (or D800 for that matter) shutting itself off due to overheating?

2 weekends in a row now out in 90+ degree weather my D4 has decided it is too hot.
Last weekend it had already shut itself off before I could check it.

Today, as I returned to check on it, it was counting down before shutting itself off with what looked like an image of a thermometer being displayed on the live view screen.

It had been recording video for just over 4 minutes, and the lens was not facing the sun.

Couldn't find anything in the user manual about this.

I spent most of a Sunday in SW Florida shooting mid-day volleyball, the lens and camera almost too hot to hold, and no problems, though I wondered about how hot it could get quite a bit. Primarily sun - temperatures mid 90's, but unrelenting sun almost directly overhead (i.e. low latitude in summer).

Fascinating they have a shutdown mode with thermometer showing. But can't imagine how hot you must have been to have it happen, based on how hot I was. Or maybe yours is mis-adjusted. I finally gave up. But quite literally the lens was uncomfortable to hold from the heat, the group was warm but not terrible, the lens hood were just plain hot if they brushed against you. One of the few times I wished for a white canon lens.

See the note at the bottom of manual page 67. Live View and movie recording use quite a bit of power, which means heat and rising internal temperatures. It isn't just the sensor - image processing is power-hungry, and it's running full-time when LV is on. Even high-rate stills photography will warm the camera up noticeably. Fortunately for me, I'm typically working in cold places (ice skating rinks) and the heat is actually beneficial.

It's a difficult problem to manage. Try to keep your camera in the coolest available place before shooting. If all else fails, bring a cooler along.

Never use it for video. Never shut down during still shooting. I use a real video camera for videos. It must have been very frustrating for you.

Despite what many people have written about D4 video, for my purposes, the D4 is an excellent camera for video that I take & what it can produce can be excellent - better than any video camera I've used for the same application. Fortunately I did capture everything that I needed before it shutdown :)

One of the reasons I am getting it is for the video. I read somewhere that Nick Ardman (Wallace & Grommit fame) has ordered a whole heap of Canon DSLR with video for a new project.

Any tips or useful info on video with the D4
