Since breaking my 28-70L I'm left with my 50mm and 70-200. I need a third lens for landscape and wondered if there were any 'budget' (£300ish) lenses for full-frame landscape photography. A prime isn't an issue and I had been thinking about the 24mm, but would that be wide enough? On my old cropped Canon I had the fantastic Sigma 10-20 (16-32 equivalent) but sold it when upgrading to FF. Any thoughts?

As weird as it can sound : Canon 24-85 USM. A very old lens, got mine for 150$.

If you shoot raw, with it's Lightroom profile (through Adobe lens profile Downloader) it's not bad at all...

Why there does not seem to be a budget UWA for Canon FF cameras is a good question. I used to use the Sigma 10-20 on my crop camera and have been looking for a FF replacement for that since I bought the 5D3.

If you can find anything I would appreciate your posting that information. I have the 24-105 that came with the 5D3 "kit" so my issue is not as serious as yours, but I would still like to know ...

There is. It's called the 17-40L.

I purchase Canon 17-40 wide angle lens for landscape photography with the 5D markii. After reading all the good reviews I decided to give it a try. I was very dissapointed. My images came out soft even in the center. [...] I'm wandering if I ended up with a bad copy! I ended up ordering the Tokina 16-28 F 2.8 and the result are much superior. If you stop Tokina to F5.6 and use a hand to control lens flare it is a perfect glass for me ; ) $600

The best deal for acceptable IQ is the 20-35/3.5-4.5 zoom (not L). It can be found used in your budget. The 17-40L will be above your budget -- even the 24/2.8 would be beyond your budget, I think.

You won't find many cheap wide angles for FF anymore, at least not new lenses. FF is not really a "budget" item in the digital age like you could find in film days. It's like shopping for cheap tires for your Ferrari.

One to look for also is the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4. Used these go for $350-ish when they pop up and they're pretty good lenses.

If it is not too wide, you can try the Samyang 14 MM.
I tried it, nice colors and really sharp, and cheap as well.

You have a very nice set of pictures!
Thanks for sharing them in full size.

If all the pictures taken in the 16-28 range come from the Tokina, it is a great lens!

I second the Samyang/Rokinon 14 mm f2.8 recommendation. it is amazingly sharp. Any distortion can be easily removed with PTLens and vignetting at f2.8 can be cleared up with simple post processing in LR or A3. Just know it is fully manual, but you can't beat the price for the high quality you get.

The other recommendation would be for you to try to find a used copy of the old Canon 20-35 mm. An awesome lens for a not bad price.

I don't know if it's wide enough, but EF 24/2.8 is excellent. Sure, it flares easily but at f/8, corner sharpness is very good, and even at f/2.8 the center part is very sharp already making it a good standard for my 650D.

Another candidate would be 17-40L, or the new 24/2.8 IS (better coating than non IS version).

Need something wide? Samyang 14/2.8 should fit the bill.

Yes, but if you have bought the 5D2 or 5D3 as a "kit" with the 24-105 then you are not gaining any extra width. Since I have that I would like something noticeably wider. The equivalent of my Sigma 10-20 crop lens would be nice and that, on a FF, would be 16-32.

there's only 16-35 L II, its not cheap, and it's not really good in the corners (esp for the price).

I wish Canon release the 14-24L soon. I've been using Nikon's 14-24 for 3 yrs and I'm still impressed by the performance.

There is a hole in your list of gear that could be filled nicely by a 17-40mm f/4 L. That is a bit over your budget, but I wonder if you could get close enough by shopping for a used copy?

A number of folks use basically that setup - 17-40 plus 70-200, augmented by the 50mm prime - for landscape.

Get the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. It's my landscape lens. It's been replaced by the 24-70 VC but I'm sure that costs double what the 28-75 cost when new. $500 new. I got it for $330 about 6 years ago with a $30 rebate, but prices have gone up a lot since then on lenses due to the weak dollar.

Can probably get it for $300 or so used. Mine has been great on my 5D for the past 6 years with no desire to replace it.
