Hi everyone,

First of all, let me tell everyone that I'm new to this forum. I've been reading things here for about a month in preparation for buying a DSLR. I'm a canon guy and didn't want to break the bank, so the D30/D60 series fits me well. After reading all of the comments, opinions, and speculation, I decided to go ahead and buy the D60 and then see what pans out later. I don't mind taking a hit if a better camera in a competitive price range comes out, at least I get to play in the meantime (I just HAD to get off film!).

Ok, now for my question: Has there been any "official" announcements from Canon US or Japan about a D60 replacemnt? I've read a lot of speculation, several "wish" lists, and a few wild guesses at what a D60 replacement and it's specs might be (numbers like D9, D40, D80, D90, etc.). Heck, there have even been a few cute photoshop-created illustrations of that the replacement might look like.

Don't take me wrong, I'll concede that I may have missed the announcement, but I've been playing pretty close attention to this list and have yet to read anything here that refers to a credible, Canon source (and I don't include Canon France, Canada, or Austrailia as someone who Canon would choose to announce a major new camera). Please correct me if I'm wrong - I just want to know if there is something that is worth repeating without having to retract it later.

Thanks all!

D60, BG-ED3, 70-200 2.8, and a couple of Tamron zooms that I really like
(also got a EOS-1 and a Elan IIe laying around... ;-)

Nothing official at all.

Something's probably coming, but nobody knows. Or at least those who know ain't saying.

Nothing has been officially accounced by Canon anywhere in the World. You will not see an official announcement until PMA which starts on May 2, 2003 in Las vegas. Something may slip out closer to that date, but nothing officlal from Canon.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, but I hope you can understand my confusion :-). Seems like 1 out of 5 threads here seem to mention something about a feature that the D60's replacement will have, or how wonderful it will be, or what the price is going to be... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some big news.

Personally, I'm a bit skeptical about the assumption that Canon has moved their product rollout schedule up from a 2-year gap between the D30 and D60, to a 1-year gap between the D60 and Dxx/3D (or whatever). Especially since they still struggling to get the 1Ds and D60 on the streets in any noticable quantities.

I guess I'm a "believe it when I see it" (on the streets!!!) kind of guy.

One of the largest professional photography stores in Northern California told me today that the D60 has been discontinued and that they may be getting only one more shipment. A smaller local store told me essentially the same thing last week, as did B & H. B & H actually had D60's in stock but the salesperson said that it was probably their last shipment.

No one could tell me what the replacement would be.

Which shop? Either way, strangely enough our Canon rep, the same for all of CA. was in last week and said that there was ABSOLUTELY no official word from Canon USA about discontinuation.

I don't doubt that something is up, we even have them on the shelf, but there has still not been anything offical from Canon.

Just curious. Did you try to place an order for D60's ?

All her would say is:

"Canon US has not officially made a statement regarding the discontinuation of the D60"

He just kept saying that. We cancelled our backorders so we wouldn't get stuck with them, nor was there a desire to sell off old goods for canon. There is a lot of problems going on right now, smaller shops were literally locked out of D60's, whil larger retailers were fed the cameras. It was really frustrating to see Canoga and samys receive so many cameras and all of ours were mysteriously backordered. Hopefully things will be different with any future cameras.

The Elan is a low end 35mm / digital. The D80 will be based on the superior EOS 3! Wait Wait Wait is all I can say. You will be happy.

(Be happy, that is.)

I just broke the bank to get a D60 and once again the technology carpet has been pulled out from under us. I, for one, hope that the accessories fro the new camera are compatible with the D60 or I (and many others) will be stuck with a white elephant.

I may have to run out and get that vertical grip sooner than I expected.

Why do you make statements like this with absolutely NO verifiable information to back it up??? Can you please point me to a credible announcement (not a made-up story, joke, or hearsay on a forum) that states that:

1. The D60 is discontinued
2. There is a replacement coming (1 or more) for the D60
3. What model number(s) the replacement camera(s) will have

Why don't you tell us where you got this magical insider information? Have you got an insider who's a member of the Canon R&D department? I'm getting really tired of reading about vaporware...

Although I can see what you are getting at - there is no OFFICIAL word from Canon, I spoke to a salesman at the photo store in Melbourne, Australia, and he confirmed with me that he has been shown the specifications of the new model - 8.5mp (probably 8 effective), 21 point autofocus. He wouldn't hazard a guess at the name of the new camera though.

It could just be one big chinese whispers scenario, but I get the impression that these specifications are fairly accurate. I just keep hearing them from so many different sources.
