Hello friends,

I used to be concerned about noise as much as you till I found absolutely stunning soft - some of you already know about it, I know, but those who don´t go to http://www.neatimage.com , download the demo for free and try it ! I ´m not going to say anything more till you try... ;-) Well, I just have to say that this will definitely make C-5050 best digicam ever concerning the noise level. I ´m not exaggerating, you ´ll see.

Slo is the noise an issue now to be taken into account when buying a new digicam ? Not at all for me.

p.s. do not worry - I ´m not anyhow connected with the Neat Image producers or sellers....

The results are excellent, however, you need to understand the soft to get them. But if you run the demo, do not adjust anything, just select the noise area and apply the filter....and see the output pic !!! You will be stunned! Not only that it is absolutely clean of noise but it preserves and ALL THE DETAILS !!!! WOW!!!

Alan

If as you said, you can run the demo and not adjust any options and get "WOW" results, then I would say you don't need to understand the software to get excellent results. :-)

Seems like it needs large areas of featureless noise to sample effectively, and that whole business of building a "profile" is way too arcane for me. I've had good luck with a couple images, but it's kind of hit and miss. I'd like to see some interface improvements.
I like Neat Image, OK, but I don't find it particularly user
friendly. I use it once it a while. Many people, like yourself
really like it. The software support is pretty good.

Different cameras exhibit different kinds/patterns of noise hence the need to profile or "train" NeatImage on the kind you have in a particular image.

As you mentioned, sometimes the image you need to fix doesn't have large areas of featureless noise. One way around that is when taking shots you figure will likely need to be processed for noise -- long exposures, low light, high ISO, etc. ... take an extra shot of something in the vicinity that is "large and featureless". Sort of like taking a dark frame for hot pixel removal. You can then load your "noise frame" into NeatImage, profile it, and save the profile so you can use it with your other images from the same session. In a pinch, you can just find an old image (from the same camera of course) that's "similar" for your profile source and it should still work pretty well.

Hey,

I have the software, but I can't manage to make a best profile (settings) for my pictures. What profiles are you using?

Thanks in adavance,
David.

Go here:

http://www.2morrow.dk/75ppi/coolpix/actions/

and grab the digital delux toolbox action pack for Photo Shop. Whenever I do noise removal I usually run the standard, and mid iso noise removal. I'd compare the results I get through this to Neat Image any day, and IMO it's a lot less work seeing as you just hit a button and it goes. Lets you do your work on full size TIFF files and such with no restriction on what format you can then save in. Only requirement is that you start out with a single layer image.

No problem. :) I've been using them a lot recently. Only problem I have is I have an asus p3b-f motherboard in my computer which HATES photoshop. Locks my computer up everytime I run it. I have a new one coming any day now which should fix the problem. One of those things were Adobe says its Asus' fault, Asus doesn't acknowledge the problem, so no one fixed it. Something about a bug on the Asus memory bus which causes Photoshop to hang during memory transfers.

Sigh, anyways, I've been running photoshop on my 300mhz laptop for the last 2 weeks while finding an alternative motherboard.

Anyday now.....

In PSP7 I use EFFECTS, NOISE, EDGE PRESERVING SMOOTH. Play with the settings. Unsharp mask afterwards also helps.

I do find all these noise reduction techniques lose detail but the general appearance is better.

Martin,

The toolbox is about 29kb in size. Remember that photoshop is actually the program doing the work. All the actions are is a list of commands that photoshop runs. In other words, if you knew all the commands you could run them yourself without installing the action. The action simply makes it easier and faster. To install them you want to go to your Adobe directory. Under there go to Photoshop X (the X being whatever version you have). So for me I go under Photoshop 7.0\Presets\Photoshop Actions. You will find in this directory other files with the ending .atn. Copy the digital_deluxe.atn into this directory. Then in photoshop you want to go to the action menu and you will be able to choose the option Load Action. After loading the action the Digital Tool box will be listed under your known actions. You can then expand it and run the desired tool you want to use. If you do some research into it you can also assign a Function key so that the push of a button runs the tool. I have mine assigned to F11. Let me know that you figure it out.
