All right gang...had to share the excitemet with you. I got home really late from work today and there was a package waiting for me...of course it was my 1Ds. It was suppose to arrive on Tuesday but the Adorama people had put a rush on it witout my asking for it (class act, BTW). The only thing was, my 24-70 f2.8 L lens is still on it's way. So I called a buddy of mine who uses Canon stuff and borrowed his 50 mm f1.4 lens. The following is just a quick shapshot of the first thing I saw through the lens. Oddly enough it was the top of my fridge. The image will win no awards but it was my first with the 1Ds and I thought since all of you have been so patient with me throughout this whole ordeal, I thought you might like to see it. The following link will take you to my galleries. Just scroll down until you get to the 1Ds folder and click on it. Then click on the thumbnail. A larger version will come up. You have the option to view the complete 3.2 MB (11.1 MP) file on my site. Please don't blame the quality of the image on the camera. It was shot with all factory defult settings in JPEG. The full exif info is also availabe in my web site. I'm on call this 3-day weekend so I won't be able to do any comparisons between the S2 and 1Ds, but rest assured that I will as soon as I get the chance. Take care gang, and thanks again!

can't say much about it, except for the insight your photo yields as to your breakfast habits

focus seems quite off ...was your aperture pretty wide open?
good luck with your camera
hope your weekend call goes well

I already shot you an e-mail as well. Colors look good, but somewhat soft. But you can never say too much about first pics...Every one of my first sets of pics with every digicam I've had have been soft. So many factors as you know.

Looking forward to seeing more.

:-) LOL! Ya shot it at f1.4 Plus there was probably a little camera shake noticable at 1/60 of second. The focus point was set to the "Triple Pack" lettering just above the "Chex" sign. Thanks for looking, bud!

Thanks for looking bud...it is a little soft but what are ya gonna do, right? Don't worry, I plan to take a lot better pictures very, very soon! :-)

I understand your enthusiasm, the first shot is usually a "grab". One thing is very evident. The inherent quality of the lens and camera. Truely stunning. If I had an extra 10 grand, I would be tempted to jump ship! I think you will find that the extra pixels won't be wasted!

Let's see what Fuji has up its sleeve in the next few months....

Best regards,

Looks alright but I really think you should switch to Planters, the plastic bag on the right needs to be sealed more tightly to prolong freshness and stay away from Soft&Silky!

I look forward to your photos from this (non-Fuji and non-Nikon) camera - I have a friend who shoots nothing but Canon and all his lenses are IS and the images are almost always sharp!

Let me know if your S2 needs a new home !

Bigger Size, Better Value. Thought it was so obvious it didn't need a response, but I guess I was wrong...

I will be really interested in an apples to apples (or Chex to Chex) comparison of the 1Ds and the S2...glad you decided to keep both, Mahesh, at least for the time being... that kind of test with comparable lenses in a variety of real life shooting environments would, in my view, be truly interesting. There are probably few, if any, other active, thoughtful amateur photographers who may find themselves owning those two particular cameras at the same time.

I'm looking forward your exploration of the new camera, in a comparative context, as you learn how it performs at various ISO settings and in capturing a range of different subjects... I wonder what the top of your refrigerator looks like through the unretouched 50mm lens of an S2? How will the extra value invested in a 1Ds reveal itself in the finished product?

We share your curiosity as to the extent to which the new Canon, as a creative tool, might add to (i) the photographer's ease and flexibility of use; and (ii) the comparative quality of the out-of-camera images. You are in a unique position to discover the answers to those intriguing questions over the coming weeks. Your commentary will undoubtedly be a fascinating contribution to this forum...perhaps even painful!

.....completely with you, Bill.

Mahesh, it will indeed be interesting to see direct comparisons that you post between the S2 and your new arrival.

Congratulations.

Best wishes,

David

I just had another thought regarding comparisons of the two cameras. I just saw an item on the B&H site for a Nikon to Canon lens adapter. You would obviously have to be in full manual, but the opportunity to put a Nikon lens on the 1Ds is very tempting, even if only till you get a selection of native Canon glass. The 60 Micro might be interesting if you have it.

Best regards,
Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan! Excellent advice! I'm gonna look at B&H right now! :-)

I realize you're upset because you didn't get a reponse to a couple postings, but grow up! This forum is a group of very friendly people that love their S2s. For the most part, people are very good at responding to other's posts and love to help. I've seen some good stuff from you here as well. Please don't ruin it by being bitter.

Teski

while Thomas' remark was a bit terse, I didn't detect any bitterness in it

btw, looking over his posts for the past few months, I haven't seen any postings of his that have not had a response

Mahesh was certainly on the edge of being overbearing in his postings about his purchase and I don't really think Thomas' reply to the question posed by Mahesh deserved your somewhat condescending comment

I understand your friendship with Mahesh prompted this defense, but I really think your comment was a bit out of line ...I really hope you do not take offense at my comments as I have found you to be a very friendly and helpful member of the forum and one who values our forum's collegiality

Mahesh,

Just curious what prompted the change. I saw some posts awhile back but was off the list for a few weeks when I was traveling.

Why did you decide to got to Canon? and why for 11mp. Just curious for the reasons. I have been able to print REALLY large photos from the S2 that are tack sharp and have great colors.

How much was the 1Ds and just wondering why you would abondone a camera that was giving you such great resulsts?
