Ken Rockwell Endorses D700 over D800/E

Two out of two, yes two out of two, D800 cameras inspected by Mr. Hogan appeared to have the AF left side focus issue.
Sad, isn't it, when the camera has been on sale for nearly half a year. This being said this is just a sample of 2 and therefore of little statistic significance (apart from the irrefutable fact that there are still cameras shipped with this problem).
The owners did not even realize it. The owners had only been using the Auto Focus AF-S, center focusing point.
There are a number of D800 owners who have admitted here that they don't use any other AF sensors and consequently do not want to check the other focus points. Personally even if I didn't use the other points I would not put up with a $3,000 camera with a defective AF. To each his own.
The "point" (pardon the pun) is that this problem with the D800 is probably fairly widespread
Maybe as many as 40% for the first months. It is certainly not a rare issue like less than 5% of cameras.
Not non-existent but rarer on D800e and D4
why in the heck would I or any other sane minded person purchase and own a D800/E camera in light of the current quality control issues?
I can only answer for myself. Because I would not have kept the camera for one more second than I need if the one I bought had any problem. I was ready to go through the disappointing experience of returning the camera for a refund. The bet paid off since I got a "good copy". I can now freely enjoy all the other features that make a D800 the great camera it should have been for all of us.

This being said, repeating KR's blogs to support your point ... No matter the merits of your view you could hardly find a less respected person in this forum to quote.

I own both D700 and D800 and i can confirm that imho it outperforms the D700 in everyway possible it is simply the most amazing camera i have ever owned and Ken rockwell is a total joke ! I stopped reading his website a long time ago because of his rediculous claims and ludicrous statements ...... people like KR would get much better results with apoint and shoot as he predominantly shoots kids at play and holiday snaps .

Anyone sitting on the fence regarding a D800 can rest assured this is a stunning camera that produces stunning results.
...but if you don't need the utterly ridiculous megapixels, or movie mode, save yourself a thousand quid and buy a D700 - as you quoted, there is no better camera. Ergo KR has a valid point, no?

(citing KR? Really. OK.)

QC issues aside, the D800 is a superior camera. It's a better 12MP camera than the native 12MP D700, for one thing, and is a better choice for low-light work under the same shooting conditions. It's cropability is frankly incredible, so even if you don't print large, you can use the 36MP to great affect. The DR is noticeably better.

That said, the D700 is still a fine choice, is easier on the workflow and gives you a few more FPS. I have no problem recommending the D700 still.

Yes, he clearly does.
I see no need for harsh language toward him.

No. It is simply not true to say that there is no better camera than the years-old D700, good as it is.

The D800 is a better camera in very single respect except speed.

Why do's anyone take idiots like this poster serious?. Ignore them and don't reply.

--Dear John.. at 6400iso, not even D3S or D4 can compete with D800 for noise... let D700 aside please... talk on what you know, not on what you are told!
I am sure you mean that the D800 sucks for noise as compared to the D3-4; right?

For those that care, but haven't read it, here is the wisdom of KR:
" I love my D800E (and I love my 5D Mark III even more), but when normal friends ask if they ought to get the D700 or D800, the answer is always "just get the D700."
/ I use this stuff all day, every day, so to me, price doesn't matter. I prefer my 5D Mark III over my D800E and don't want to carry the fat versions of either, the D4 or 1D X. /

/ If money matters at all, the D700 is a bargain, since it's the same as the D800, but with a much better LCD and better image quality, and with better ergonomics since the D700 adds full, direct AF controls sorely lacking on the D800.

Why does the D700 have better image quality than the D800? Easy: the D700 has accurate colors, while the D800 has a nasty green/yellow shift that needs M1 White Balance shift to correct. It doesn't matter how many pixels you have if they're not the right color.

The D800 is just the video version of the D700; for still shooting, if price matters, duh, get the D700. "
The part of this I agree most with is "duh" (but only if taken out of context! ;) )

What lol? Sucks if your an idiot viewing at 100% on a monitor. However these people are looking at a print that would be several meters across. How about compare it to the D3s and D4 at the same size, could be fairer. The D800 has great "noise performance".

Who cares what Ken Rockwell and his growing family endorses?

immediately losses credibility.

Are we speaking of sizes of prints or noise? My Leif blows the 800 in print but that does not mean that the Leif is better with respect to noise at high iso (and other issues), when the 800 works, that is.

You are a sad person.

I'm back! I warned everyone months ago when the D800 first came out. Do not buy until we are sure all the bugs are worked out! Here we go almost a half a year later, and sure enough!

I'm having a hard time understanding how it is less sad, less rude or more credible to say "when it works" over and over and over again.
