Mountain Lion

Upgraded my Mid 2008 iMac and have had one kernel panic on startup, but I cleared that and all has been well since. All the settings I had in 10.7.4 transferred into 10.8 without a problem and everything is running fine apart from VMWare Fusion, which has to be updated to V4.1.3 as V4.1.2 refuses to open.

One small thing is that if you want Notification Centre to work with e-mail, you need e-mail running in the background (obvious when you think about it) so I selected "Open at Login" from the Dock icon options, kill e-mail on the red dot rather than quit from the Mail menu and all works as I want it to - Messages the same.

Dave.

My main iMac is still on 10.6. There really is not much in these upgrades that's worth the risk of ruining your setup. But sooner or later I will have to do it though...
I've upgraded because Messages and Notification Centre.

Improved performance?? Really? I would love to see the benchmarks (no sarkasm! I remember seing LR benchmarks that where slower under Lion than SL).

Airplay - nice if you have a new mac that can actually run it (but I dont have any use for it).

I use Gmail, so I have never used the mail app.

Dictation - how many are really using that? But english only, so no use here.

Documents in the cloud - ehm... yeah right if you use Apple office suite. I use MS Google wich works on both Mac and Windows.

Messages - this IS actually cool... if it worked reliably...

Notifications - Ehm I allready get those from growl...

Well in the end I will upgrade offcourse. If nothing else I want messages and the new Time Machine features.
Why upgrade? You mean aside from improved performance, Gatekeeper, AirPlay, VIP mail, excellent dictation, documents in the cloud, messages, notifications and various bug fixes.

I'd have to ask why would anyone not upgrade. I finished three systems (2 MPB's and an iMac) and all were flawless upgrades. On my older MBP (early 2008) it feels like I got a new laptop. It clearly runs faster now then when new.

Thank you Doug, I may buy it on my next days off and see how it goes.

Can't speak for your r1800, but I suspect that all will be well. I have an Epson r3000 and it works absolutely perfectly with no upgrades to the driver. I suspect that they did not mess with the underlying driver technology in Mountain Lion. They had already done that in Lion. Also, there is absolutely no reason all of your current HDs shouldn't work just fine. I'm not sure about network volumes, but even there I think no problems. This release appears to be a "finish up" of all the "features" they wanted in Lion but didn't have enough time. So all the infrastructure had already been done, and this just layers features on top of that.
-- can anyone point me to a site that will show if my epson R1800 and other HD s will work with the new Mt Lion. I asked at apple store this morning. And no one knew. I was in there to buy an apple tv
Thanks. In advance Katz

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

I downloaded it, but now I'm scared to install. Do I need to turn off printer or external HD 's ? Or just leave everything running? Couldn't find this info on Apple site. I took a little over 20 minutes to download, but read that it take hours to install. Is this true? If so I need to wait for a day off so I can keep any on on things.
Thanks again Katz

It takes about 30 min to install depending on the Mac.

First, you should always have a bootable backup of your current internal drive before installing a new OS X update. Do that first. Then, it is always a good idea to disconnect any connected peripherals before installing. It takes about 30 minutes to install. Totally painless. After installation the update will check your disk for any incompatible software and put it in a folder for you to dispose of. Next, plug in your peripherals, and restart your computer. Everything should be fine. I always go into Disk Utilities and fix permissions. Might be like having a four leaf clover, but it makes me feel good.

Installed last night ..... seems to be working okay. Importantly for me NX2 and transfer NX are running perfectly. The entire system seems to be a bit snappier. About an hour to install and start up.

I upgraded last week and it appears to have caused an issue with my wifi. If I'm away from the computer for a long time (like hours) it drops wifi and the only solution is to reboot.

I'm not very happy about this.

...The BEST thing about Mt Lion is now I have another year of Apple Care. I LOVE APPLE !!!!
How does it work? Is there a documentation about it or just after you purchased ML you were notified about Apple Care extension? is it for everybody (under Apple Care) or a random goody?

I have a classmate (42 yrs ago) that is on my Facebook and he works at an apple call center. He told me. 1-800-my apple and ask for apple care CPU this is if you bought the upgrade not got it for free .
