Why the simplistic neck strap loops on Canons?

Not that it's all that crucial, but I can't help but notice that Nikon cameras are fitted with much nicer, more robust loops for their neck straps. For Canons, it's just the flat metal tabs with the slot in them.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Canon didn't put much thought into the design of these? Or did they have a particular reason for designing them this way?

Never noticed the difference but I just looked at the D800 review for a comparison. No thanks. They stick out while the Canon ones are flush. I don't use the straps very often and having the ones that stick out would just be a hassle.

Also they don't as robust as the Canon ones.

The design works. It's that simple.

lol, you can remove them. > .

I'd MUCH rather have Canon's slotted tabs than Nikon's protruding lugs. The Nikon design assumes you're going to put a metal ring through the lug, which is a really bad idea, as the ring will scuff and scratch the camera over time. I use Optech neoprene straps which connect to the camera with plastic tabs that are just the right size to fit through Canon's slots. Not scuffing or scratching.

It's just the matter of personal preference, I have been shooting both brand for long long time and I personally like the Nikon style better than Canon style. but one thing I do like the Canon much better is on all their 1D bodies they have a built in eyelet on the vertical grip for attaching handstrap, i wish my D3 has that, I have handstrap on all my 1D series bodies, I don't normally use neck strap but a BlackRapid or similar type of carrying strap.

The Canon loops won't pull out of the body, like the Nikon ones sometimes do.

I believe the strap lugs are more robust and eliminate rings from marring the body. Since I don't use the Canon straps and prefer OpTech, their Uniloops fit perfectly and the quick disconnects make swapping straps to slings easy and efficient........

.....and this method of attachment will never accidently come off either.............

Haven't taken the neck strap out of the plastic bags for the last two Canons I have bought.......

Removable is another possible point of failure. Still liking the Canon one more.

Have you taken the cameras out of the box at least? :-)

No way! They might lose their resale value if I misplaced the boxes. :-)

lol. ALL manufacturer straps are crap. Please don't make out Canon has the best, theirs is as cheap, uncomfortable and nasty as everyone elses. They cost about 5 cents to make by a small child living in some backwater in China. Most manufacturer straps get left in the box and I would strongly urge you to try a strap which is properly made to do the job, if you had you really wouldn't be making hilarious comments like this.

...does it seem like Canon didn't put much thought into the design of these?
I'd say the opposite. Canon previously used the ring lug design. The flat lug is an improvement. No scratching and the strap lays flat.
Indeed, the scratching is a real deal breaker. I hate if my tools have scratches, ruins every shot. lol

You're missing the point. The OP thinks that Canon has not put any effort into the design of the lugs. My point is that it is a better design than the competition even if in a very small way. And they are stronger not weaker as he claims.
