I've had the GPS on for hours and nothing.... even tried using PMB utility....

Other have said in this forum "it takes a while". What's a while? My DSC-HX5 locks on in 30s, whilst the A77 doesn't even grab a single satellite. Is it bust?

Just making sure you covered your bases:
-Is GPS turned on?
-Is GPS assist enabled?
-Are you trying to acquire a satellite connection indoors or outdoors?

My A77 acquires a connection within 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on how long it has been powered off, if it is indoors, or has been powered on in a very different location than the last time it was powered on. So to me, it's an acceptable amount of time that takes about the same time as my Garmin GPS does (if not maybe a hair longer).

Probably, if you are outdoors and not in a city. Mine locks generally in 1-2 minutes when it does not do so in seconds.

When you connect the 77 to the computer the PMB starts and you should see something like 'Gps data update'.

Once done go outside and set the Gps in the camera on, be sure not to be near radar and cellphone/radio towers, power lines,, try to find an open field with free view to the sky, avoid (urban) canyons.

Don't stick your head between the gps and the sky, or cover it with your body.
.With new data loaded you should have a sat lock in a few minutes.
If you have VERY heavy clouds, your sats might be not visible on that moment.

I was two weeks in Iceland, it locked it in seconds every time... usually less than 15 seconds even if there where 300 km between two spots :)

I have been using my a55 with a GPS for two years without an issue.

My a77 grabs a gps signal in less than 20 seconds all the time.

If it's been off for an extended period it might take longer.

But it works great.

I also have a gps in my phone, and the gps1 Sony sold, and a car gps gizmo which is the worst.

On the phone you can get an app to show the satelittes and how good they are, I usually get 9 with a 15 or so foot accuracy. I can see it change from the front to the back of my home lot.

Don't forget to have updated GPS information on your cam and correct date and time!

Without that it won't work correct...
