I have been amazed at the amount of expert help that is available on this web site. Sometimes, however, the advice assumes a level of knowledge that I do not have. (And there might be others similarly handicapped.)

I would really appreciate someone's recommending appropriate settings for the combination of the Canon S820, QImage, and Office Depot Premium High Gloss paper.
Please go step by step - ALL settings in both QImage and the printer settings.
Thanks in advance.

Phil,

Do youuse profiles when you print? That would affect the priinter driver and Qimage settings but here is what I do:

First I set my printer driver settings from within Qimage by going to Page, Page/Printer Setup

Printer driver settings:
Media Type: High Gloss Photo Film
Print Quality: Custom, Fine(1),
Halftone: Diffusion
Color Adjustment: Manual, All sliders = 0
Enable ICM: Off
Print Type: None
Brightness: Normal

Then I go to Settings, Color Management

Enable Monitor and set it to AdobeRGB 1998
Enable Printer and select my profile for OD Premium High Gloss Paper

Then I put an image in the queue and print.

Hope this helps,

Cathy

Phil,

I use Photo Paper Pro media type, custom quality= fine(all the way right), diffusion, no optimizers. Manual color=ICM enabled, +20 intensity.

I will try these settings for the S820.
Why do you set Halftone on Diffusion? What does that do?
Is the Monitor setting in QImage done to make the screen consistent, or what?
And, finally, where do you get a profile for OD Premium High Gloss?

Do you use QImage? If so, do you have a preferred monitor or printer setting?
If not, what software do you print with?

Phil, yes I use QImage. I won't print anything serious from any other program. I leave all profiling off in QI. I try to keep my monitor calibrated using Adobe Gamma and my video cards controls. So far I am happy with the results. I tried applying the printer profile in QI instead of the print driver but didn't get good results. My colors went to spot on when I let the driver handle the ICM. My only complaint was saturation. The Canon drivers from about a year ago on seem to give washed out results. I solve that with the +20 correction.

The way I arrived at the settings I liked was to take a photo of a subject that I was very familiar with and would recognize any color shifts, and print it multiple times at a size that I could get 4 to a page. Using QI in manual placement I moved the shot around the page so I could print 4 pictures(one at a time) with 4 different sets of settings on one page. With the prints on the same page it's fairly easy to zero in on something you like.

Why do you set Halftone on Diffusion? What does that do?
This not answer from an official source of info, but what I have observed by printing in dither, auto and diffusion modes. Halftone settings change the pattern that the printer sprays the inks dots onto the paper. Diffusion gives a smoother, fine appearance than Dither. Leaving it set to Auto has given me unpredictable results so I make a habit of setting it to Diffusion manually.
Is the Monitor setting in QImage done to make the screen
consistent, or what?
It gives Qimage a known working color space, having your monitor calibrated and set to a known working color space is the first step in getting your prints to match the image on your monitor. Which in turn will make editing/color correction easier, faster and save ink and paper.
And, finally, where do you get a profile for OD Premium High Gloss?
I made my own with a printer profile application.

Not sure if any body told you this yet but you can get profiles at http://wandb.co/icc.htm Just follow the instructions. S900 driver is the same as the s820. You can then use the ICC profiles for your specific paper in Qimage. It is mentioned in earlier posts on this forum. Just do a search if you need more detail. Mike

I tried the profiles and am happier with the results I get from using Canon's own ICM.
