Hi all
I'm about to invest into the Nikon d800e and sell all my Canon gear
I love the iq of the Nikon
Looking at getting the 24-70 2.8 to start off with
Concerned adroit focus problem is it very common?

Is there really any issues with the color of the images compared to canon glass and sensors?
Is there any other issues to expect from this cam?
Unfortunately I have to wait about 8weeks for the stock to arrive in Australia
By then u would hope any bugs have been ironed out
So I am slightly considering the 5dmk3 because I have a few L lense
And it seems obvious to stay with canon but the Nikon gear keeps me coming back
Any help ?

If you shoot landscape or product then the D800 is the best SLR & the centre focus point is all you will need. If you are a people shooter then canon is good enough!

To be honest, I have just moved from the Canon world to the D800.

I love that camera but not really know why so far since I have an AF issue, cannot get sharp photos so far, and discovering a new world where people are finding normal to have to fine tune their lenses what I never had to do on Canon bodies in the previous 30+ years.

Despite all of that, I still love the D800 and I am full of hope that Nikon will get it fixed (should have it back this week...).

I do prefer the feeling in my hands and if the controls are confusing at the beginning I am finding their more logical and at the right place. But that can all be subjective and also depends of hands size...

The D800 is asking more from the photographer but I am sure that once you will have learned on how to properly use it you will get the most of it. There is a lot of potential there. Hand held photos are much more difficult but that might be due to the high sensor resolution, and out of the AF issue, the other things/complains will probably be resolved in future firmware.

If you only cover sport events, I would not suggest to go for the D800, for the rest, I will, but if you can't wait, be potentially prepared for one trip to the Service center. Note they can adjust your lenses with your body to give you perfect results without any need for further fine tuning... but only on that particular body.

Good luck.

;-)

Thanks

That is my concern ,focusing and sharp image problems. But with what i have seen the images look great but i am wondering how hard it would be to get it right and how much stuffing around with the service centre there ultimately will be!

i'm about to bite the bullet in a few hours and put a order for one and then wait ,hopefully trouble free.

For what its worth my D800E is perfect in all regards.

So are 2 other copies I know of in others hands.

I suspect the AF issue is less common in Australia than in other countries.

The other thing about Nikon lenses is you can put a Novoflex adapter on them to use them with Canon bodies. I did that with my 40D and Nikon 14-24, 24-70 etc. It worked beautifully.

As far as colours etc goes I have found my D800E to be the best camera by far I have ever used.

I occassionally find it a bit difficult to get exposure right if the subject is backlit a lot.

5D3 seemed disappointing to me. I think its a good camera overall but simply not outstanding like it needed to be to match the D800E.

I am also now only wanting to use non AA filter cameras in the future. The D800E has been superbly sharp so far.

My D800 has been perfect, no problems at all. I am delighted with it. I shoot raw and jpg, but I do very little in PP after, the photo's don't seem to need it.

I have never owned a Canon, but my son has. In the days of film, I think the Canon lenses had nicer colour, and more subtle gradation, than Nikon, which were a little more contrasty, but now with Photoshop it doesn't matter so much.

Great stuff

Would you suggest or recommend this Camera for "everyday" photography or is it more of use with a tripod and shoot still subjects to get the best results?

I would like to think that I can use it like my 7d but without the 7d8fps! with far more iq. I shoot 75% of the time landscapes and also love lightning/storm photography

Based on still nobody at dpreview posting an image using a good AF target and 325 owners in UK reporting no AF fault or any other fault - no .
Is there really any issues with the color of the images compared to canon glass and sensors?
No.

Nikon have improved colour gamut of the rear screen from well short of sRGB to very close to sRGB colour space.

The rear screen looks different with some subjects - my D800 rear screen colour is definitely more accurate than my D3s, D7000 or D300.

You can fine tune image colour (but not the rear monitor) in small increments of R, G and B in the menu options to get almost any colour interpretation you prefer.

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge of complex modern camera equipment.

it is common to have a slight out of DOF when using left most AF points at f2.8 on wide angle lenses. It is fixable by most service centres. most people regard it as a non-issue for their shooting, a few do.
Is there really any issues with the color of the images compared to canon glass and sensors?
better, better
Is there any other issues to expect from this cam?
addiction

thats your choice

if you have a lot of money in canon lenses, and can't sell them for a good price, the 5Diii is still a great cam. Personally if you don't need the extra af points the 5Dii is much better value as the sensor performs the same
And it seems obvious to stay with canon but the Nikon gear keeps me coming back
Any help ?

I can only tell you what I see with my D800.

Fantastic Camera with no problems whatsoever. Focus is fast and spot on target. I shoot in RAW and process using "Capture nx2" and I am extremely happy with the end result. I use the 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8 and have had no focus issues. I have also used my 28-300VR on the D800 and I am still blown away with the quality! Not up to the 24-70 / 70-200 but still very good.

I consider the D800 usable in ALL situations the same as I would use my D700. Hand held yields perfect results and at no time have I felt that 36mp is for Tripod only.

As to the experience of others, I cannot comment. My experience is one of sheer joy where the D800 is concerned. Fantastic to use, very very flexible with superb output.

I have always been Nikon (since digital) as I have never seen a need to go elsewhere. Does that make me a fanboy? Maybe it does but I know quality when I see it and the D800 is just that, quality.

there are hundreds that are very happy.

There always is two sides to a camera experiance good or bad,and the same for my canon gear .

Although i was relatively happy with my 7d i wanted to upgrade to the 5dmk2 but the mk3 came out which for the money wasnt as much of a upgrade from the mk2,then the D800 came out and changed my thinking in many ways.I still like my canon gear and for a 3.5k upgrade id rather have the iq of the new nikon stuff.

so i took the plunge and ordered the d800e and now i wait, hopefully for a working body!
i'm still in shock i have switched to the dark side ;p

Congrats on your new pruchase and fingers crossed you are one of the many with a fully functioning D800.

One piece of advice, go out and shoot in the real World. Use the Camera as inteneded and as you would any other. Learn the Nikon way with menus etc and on Camera operation and the processing of Raw's. I then think you will be absolutely delighted.

Plenty of good advice on here and other forums when it comes to setting up your D800 so just ask.

Enjoy when you get it.

Thanks Mark
Looking forward to the change i just i can get around the Nikon system quickly

I shot for a time with the Canon 1d Mark III and various L zoom and prime lenses and had second shooters using 30D, 40D, 5D, 5D Mark II cameras. Comparing the RAW image files I could tell which camera took a given picture but after post processing they all looked the same.

For still photography in many areas the D800 and Nikon lenses and flash system is the best available today. For video there is a lot more information available and third party support for the Canon 5D Mark II and III cameras simply because they have been out longer so there are more of them in use.

Image quality is part of what brought me back to Nikon with the 14-24mm f2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lenses that were superior to the Canon 16-32mm f2.8 II and 24-70mm f2.8 lenses that I had been using. The Nikon lenses also do not need recalibration and never have had the problems that Canon shooters frequently encounter with autofocus.

I use it that way.

Yes tripod improves any cameras sharpness not just D800E. But to maximise sharpness I would tend to do that. Or use image stabilisation if my lens had it.

Just shoot with a higher shutter speed. The sensor is very sensitive and super low noise so you can increase the ISO with little consequence. It makes it very versatile.

I am completely happy with my D800E and it is by far the best camera I have ever used. Its a stunner.

5D3 seems like a fabulous all round camera but it lacks the wow factor for me and does not offer a no AA filter option. Its simply an excellent camera not a ground breaker like the D800E.

Now I want no AA filter on any future camera.

The competition for D800E is not so much 5D3 as medium format and from what I hear it is causing a stir in that market.

Greg.

Hi Conan, not sure where you ordered your 800/e from (to take 8 weeks delivery) but I ordered mine from Photographic Wholesalers in Hutt st, Adelaide and received it 2 weeks later.

Two weeks would bemuch more accurate
I got it from JB Hifi as they had a special on for 24hrs yesterday

They rang the Nikon rep in Sydney which said 3 weeks or if not 3weejs after depending on stock availability
I'm hopeing for 3weeks but they couldn't give me a exact date
