OK...so far it looks like I am going to get the Coolpix 5000. I can spend up to 1,000. and need a swivel monitor. Wide angle is important....not super wide, but what the 5000 has to offer works. Am I missing any cameras that would fit my needs??

There aren't very many digicams with 28 mm equiv. to choose from. Apart from the CP5k, there's the Minolta D7 series (D7, D7i, D7Hi). They're very different cameras from the Nikon, with some definite advantages (e.g., more reach, arguably better lens, more manual control) and some downsides (bulkier, pictures need post-processing, steeper learning curve).

Why is a swivel LCD a requirement? (Meaning, it's certainly a good thing to have, but it wouldn't be a decisive factor for me.)

If you prefer to use wide angle, Nikon CP5k is the only choice even though Minolta D7 can also go down to 28mm. The difference is that Nikon made a WC-E68 wide angle converter to that CK5k can go as wide as 19mm (35mm equivalent) with very very good capability. And, THIS IS UNIQUE.

Actually the reason why I need a swivel monitor is because I take a lot of pics of myself! Long story, but it is something I do and for me it is a must on my camera.

Then, the Nikon Coolpix 4500 could be more appropriate because it has a swivel body design. Take a look at my 4500 user guide at http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam

Being able to line up waist-level shots without getting on your
knees is pretty cool.
I agree, it is cool. I'd certainly like that feature on my cameras. However, there are always trade-offs involved in buying a camera, and I was wondering why the original poster had decided to nail down the swivel LCD as a requirement, instead of making it a flexible factor. (E.g.: which would I rather have, a wider-range zoom with a mechanical zoom ring or a swivel LCD?) There must have been a reason for it; I was wondering what it is. Nailing down the "wrong" requirements will unnecessarily restrict your choice.

As mentioned by a previous poster, the CP5000 with an extender lens can get you to 19mm, and the camera also takes Nikon speedlight flashes, both very useful. The swivel monitor is easily as useful as the split body for self portraits.

Go ahead, its a fine camera. Its only real drawback is the relatively slow lens at telephoto and lack of a focus ring for precise manual focus in low light. The latter may be a factor if you plan to shoot indoors a lot.

However there are not a whole lot of choices in this market.

I have friend who just got a coolpix5000
But I only got to play whit it ones, and I love the 28mm
lens it gives so many possibilities.
To bad hi wont let me use it more, but I understand him
because I be wherry clumsy at times.

I think You shut now there ha been a lot of dissuasion about
focusing whit the 5000. I think the best thing do w..be to try
it out in a shop before buying it,

I now Its cheaper on the net. so I w..likely not buy it in a shop.
But since I now how hard it ise to compete whit the prizes
on the net, I think if one gets a good service from a shop, one has
a duty support them bay buying some thing from them
thats my opinion
