On a down note, I wonder if the raccoon was rabid. I've heard that usually when you see a raccoon mid-day, it may be sick. We have lots of raccoons around in our mid-Atlantic region, but they generally make themselves very scarce during daylight hours. We also have a high incidence of rabies in raccoons and foxes especially. In our county, if your dog tangles with a raccoon or fox, it has to go into quarantine... even with up-to-date vaccination proof! Trash cans and bird feeders attract them. Our dog chased a fox from our backyard not long ago, but luckily the fox apparently was healthy, didn't turn on her and outran her! Then some readers may recall she recently chased a large male deer from the yard. Suburbia is not tame.
