1:1 ratio on X100 ?

Hello !

I'm an X100 hapy owner (despite its flaws)... but I've been missing one feature from the start : the ability to shoot 1:1 images, as this is a format I'm really comfortable with. I knew it wasn't there when I bought the camera, and it was not a dealbreaker, nevertheless I find it really strange that square format is available for both x10 and X-Pro1, but has not been implemented on the X100.

Cropping the picture in post is really not the same as framing within the desired format...

I suppose it can't be that hard to implement this feature on a future firmware...

What do you think ?

I completly agree with you, Sony Nex are also missing this feature and I love framing square up from the snap.

Personnally I won't buy a camera without it and would wait until a firmware update provides it.
But for many this is no substancial subject, for me it is.

Hi,

I agree and would love a square format on X100. I think it would be easy to implement in firmware and having a correct framing wither in EVF or OVF.

I crop often to 1:1 in PP.

Regards

Me too! One of the reasons I like to use Hipstamatic is just for this square format.

If I crop in post I will either maintain the ratio of go square, nothing else. many shots end up square.

I am not so convinced that 1:1 will be introduced though. Secondly how to deal with this in RAW? When sent to Lightroom many settings are lost in translation....

I wouldn't say the settings are lost, they just don't apply. RAW takes the raw data from the camera's sensor and doesn't do anything to it other than write it to the card with the appropriate metadata. All of the other processing settings in the camera (such as artificial limitations on the size of the image or the color processing) do not apply, since you are only saving the RAW sensor data. That is the advantage of shooting RAW.

I don't know if there are other cameras that have a square sensor, but otherwise you are simply throwing away pixels. Now maybe you didn't care about them to begin with, but I'm not usually one for throwing away information unnecessarily. I imagine it would be rather easy to setup a quasi automated Lightroom workflow to automatically crop your images into a 1:1 format.

As for the assistance in the viewfinder framing, I think you are right and it would be an easy addition to the firmware, but it wouldn't effect the RAW files, since they will still contain the entire sensor data for the APS-C size and aspect ratio.

I think the sensor in the panasonic LX5 has actual different ratios. You're not really throwing pixels away necessarily. Even raw files come in whatever ratio you selected.

I'd go with a square frame in the viewfinder or the screen, even if the saved file is larger and I have to manually crop it in post.

Or the jpg could be square, and the RAW full size...

Thanks for your comments anyway !

It is still driving me batty that Fuji hasn't added 1:1 in a firmware update. I've been shooting my X100 like a mini GF670, and I'd love to have square frame lines to compose.

It's never going to happen so you might as well get used to it.

Should be doable in firmware. The X Pro 1 has that feature. I love it and totally agree that cropping in post is not the same. I really like how the guidelines and EVF all change when you enable 1:1 on the X pro 1.

The cameras share great similarities it seems like it should be possible.

It certainly might, if it's brought up enough, and it would be an easy firmware update. It seems people wanted it enough to convince Fuji to add it to the X10 and XP1, so I'm still hoping.

I think it's absolutely doable and there is no reason why it can't be organised in a firmware update. There is demand. I too would love it!

I crop to 1:1 quite often.

However, unlike most on this thread I think it is much better to crop in post.

I wouldn't particularly hate having 1:1 frame lines in the OVF, but I would object to simply throwing away 1/3 of the pixels if shooting RAW. Having the 3:2 frame gives a lot of extra leeway for fine-tuning the crop later.

Anyway, however they implemented it in a firmware update would be fine by me - worst case is that I wouldn't use it. But it sure sounds like it would make some people happy. :)

Folks have been yelling and screaming at Fujifilm to fix the broken histogram in manual mode without even a hit of them being heard. That is far more of a flaw in the camera than not having 1:1 lines.

I certainly wouldn't want the RAWs to be cropped. Most cameras that offer various aspect ratios only crop the jpegs, not the RAWs, although, sometimes the RAWs have metatags that tell programs like Lightroom to automatically crop the RAWs.

I don't think it's a flaw, necessarily. If you use off camera flash, you're probably using M mode, and it makes a lot of sense for that use. Granted, Sony NEX offers a better setup by allowing you to turn on/off live preview in any mode, and that'd be a more ideal way of doing it.

There have been tons of complaints about the X100 over the last year, and Fuji has released several firmware updates. Why not this one? To be honest, if I could change a single thing about the camera, outside of maybe even faster AF, I'd want more image shooting ratios, like 5:4 and 1:1. It's an easy fix.

Another vote for 1:1 framing on an X100.

In fact, it was partly the lack of this that lead me to get an OM-D rather than an X100 (X-Pro is just a bit out of my finanical league).
