BB King in B&W by the K5 & DA* 50-135

I was going through some concert shots I took of BB King in the last year and did several B&W conversions. I've been doing a lot of B&W conversions lately testing different methods for conversion. These were all done using only the B&W adjustment layer in Photoshop CS5.

These were all shot with the K5 and the DA* 50-135 at ISO 1600

Amazing. I hope you were well paid. Looks like I need to start saving up for a new lense.

No pay, this was just for fun while I was at the concert. I always shoot BB when he is in the area.

Great shots, Jim. How do you get your camera into the venue? I always get the "no professional cameras allowed" meaning dSLRs. It's one of the reasons I got a MFT rig, since they usually ignore those.

I know the owners of the venue and get "Media Seating" for any concerts I am interested in.

On another note, the Fuji X-Pro1 does not have the appearance of a "Pro Camera" as most venues recognize so it is also a good option for concert work. The K5 will always be my first choice for concerts but sometimes a smaller camera like the X-Pro1 will pass when the K5 will not.

Jim, the shots of BB are good, but this below really shines IMO. The light/shadow is perfect, the composition is great, the horn, pose, perfect positioning, the expression/concentration brings it home, and the B&W conversion probably couldn't be much better. Congrats.

Thanks.. I have to admit that this shot is one of my favorites from the concert, even though it is not of BB. His backup band is incredible and they are always dressed to the nines.. a class act both in appearance and talent.

Great shots- EXIF isn't available. Have an idea of the focal lengths used for the shots?

I always enjoy viewing your work. Thank you for sharing.
Kind of you to say... I've not been using the K5 for the last several months as I have been working with the Fuji X-Pro1 (great IQ & high ISO performance)

Yes, the K5 stays in the fold.. it's a different tool for me.

Excellent series of photos. Very good b&w conversion.

Excellent! Converting to B&W just adds a dramatic effect you do not obtain in color images.

Not too difficult to see that for the few of us who still shoot film (and I am one of them) why only B&W film is still holding it's own according to several shops I deal with.
