If you wanted the x-Pro1 for a travel camera while on vacations and could take just one lens which would you purchase? Fuji 18mm or 35mm.

Thank you. That was my thought also. Just wanted opinions from you experienced shooters.

Impossible question without seeing your history as a photographer. I have landscapes that I very much like, shot with a 14mm on full frame, but also with telephotos up to 300mm. Long lenses appear to compress perspective, making it possible to relate the subject to the background. With a long lens, one can be highly selective. This one was shot with a 300mm to blend grove and hill side.

On the other hand, wide lenses emphasize perspective producing a sense of space. A challenge to include a subject, but when the subject is vastness, a superwide will do the trick. This is 14mm of a prairie scene.

Normal lenses produce perspective similar to what your eye sees. So yes, the 35mm will do excellent landscapes, and so will the 18mm. As a bonus, either will do great motion panoramas. In this case it was the 35mm on the X-Pro1.

Each lens will to a great extent dictate how you see, and all can do landscapes perfectly. If you are stuck with a single lens, choose the one that provides the perspective you most want.

Inbolch, your post is great!

Thanks for posting the examples. It really depends on whether you want the look of wide-angle distortion or not.

As noted, it is very simple to create a panorama or stitch multiple 35mm photos together but the perspective is different compared to a true wide angle lens.

To the OP:

Which type of picture looks better to you? That is the question.

Borh lenses are usable, but I would definitely choose the 35mm f/1.4. It has larger apperture and much better optics (sharper)
