I have this annoying circle in images from my D800 w/ 70-200/f2.8G VR. The lens is an original 70-200 VR lens, not the newer VR II model. The image below is a 100% zoom screen capture and clearly shows a circle formed by the edges of the aperture blades. Is this a known problem with this older model lens and the D800? Is there a problem with the lens? The image was taken with NO filter on the front.

It's shutter lube, my buddy wanted me to go over his d800 the day he received it last week. His sensor was covered with those after observing an F22 sky shot. I dropped it off in Melville for its one free clean.. This happened w my D3 for months, I made them clean it four times at no charge. Getting bad results with far left AF on 800 this morning as well, I’ve seen enough. Love the IQ but holding off for now

i had few of those white donuts on my D800, they seem to be oils and show up on f/4 or smaller against blue sky. I would shoot until more show up than have it clean.

Agree with others' comments - looks like a stain on the sensor, not something you would have caused. Have you been able to find additional spots on the sensor?

Previously I shot Pentax. Pentax had the same issue with a batch of the K5s that came out. With my K5, it was actually a series of small dots (stains), so was not difficult to find. Luckily it was covered under warranty - because it was the sensor, they just gave me a new camera body.

Hopefully Nikon also has good service on this.

I've had the same issue and posted on another thread after I'd sent the D800 to Nikon to have oil spots removed. They sent it back with a clean bill of health, saying their was dust on the sensor, but no oil.

Within a few hundred frames, I noticed the problem is still there. Wierdly, the spots are moving around on the sky image. I'm shooting at 24mm on a 14-24, but haven't tried really small f stops yet to see if I get a more clear image.
