What is the difference between a Panasonic DMC-GX1X and a Panasonic DMC-GX1? I have seen both of these cameras advertised, but I am wondering what the difference is. I was wondering if the added X was for a new type of lens that you could add to the GX1. Anyone know the difference and which would be the best buy?

The last X denotes this has the X power zoom lens as part of the kit. I think this camera is available as body only as well as packaged with two (or three) different kit lenses and each of these variations is offered in two different colors. So there are lots of different possible SKU's each having a slightly different suffix to the GX1, but the same basic camera body.

Thank you, I am new to this type of lenses, I have only shot with 35 mm lenses and they do not have those types of lenses. After reading a little further, Ihave found the answer to my question. Where my Lx3 has an auto zoom lever on the camera, the X type of lenses have the zoom lever on the lens. I am going to have to do a whole lot of learning before I purchase that type of camera to make sure that I will like what I purchase.

I have the Lx3 which has a power zoom lens, so are you saying that the lens will zoom out in the same manner as my Lx3?
Yeah it comes with this collapsing pancake zoom rather than the larger (and cheaper) regular zoom lens.

Of course you can use this lens with any m4/3 camera so you don't need the GX1 X kit, but the kit should be a little cheaper than buying a GX1 body and this lens separately.

Thanks, that helps a lot. There is about a $150 difference in price for those two lenses on the very same camera. I am looking for a much lighter system for just carrying around with me.

The GX1 with the standard zoom is pretty light anyway but I saw some questions re problems with blurring on the power zoom so that possible problem, the additional cost and the dubious benefit of a powered zoom lens made the cheaper option a no-brainer for me.

YMMV of course.

That is the kind of information that I wanted, I think that I will take the same route as you and purchase camera with the much cheaper lens.

I've not regretted it, it's a very nice camera.

I bought the GX1 with the power zoom and I would advise you to seriously consider this option. If you dont care about size, the bigger zoom might do the job - but then you might consider if m43 is even the right system. The 14-42x is a great lens (and I also have the standard 14-42) and it is the size of this lens that really makes m43 a fantastic system. There has been know to be problems with this lens, but it seems that there are less problems with the current production than ealier productions. The 14-42 is very sharp and the Power OIS is very good (I can handheld my shots on 42mm down to 1/6 second - and my hands are quite shaky (I have never been able to do this with my traditional 14-42)).

Unless the price difference is very important to you / or in the case a small system does not matter (in which case you might be better of with other camera choices) I would strongly suggest you try / buy the 14-42x
