I think I may use DX mode a lot with D800

I figure it's similar to a D7000 in DX mode and if I'm not doing any serious work or wide angle shots, I will use DX or 1.2 crop mode for walk around stuff.

If you want to use a D800 this way (a separate topic maybe) it has better AF than a D7000.

99% of photo equipment is good or very good. The main thing to do with it is to learn to use it well.

It is particularly attractive when shooting images where there is going to be lots of space that is going to get cropped anyway later. I can see its use for BIF photography for example and even for sports photography.

I was very surprise having taken some pictures that were captured as Basic JPEGs at how large I could make the pictures. No doubt that I could use the Basic JPEG (set for maximum quality) to make a 11x14 print. The file size is about 5MB which is a space savings if you do not need to make a very large print or using it for Web or some other moderate resolution demanding application.

Dont understand buying a very expensive camera and not using its capabilities

If you are so worried about space then convert to jpg, but dont start out with the intention of capturing a crappy image quality surely - start with the best image quality in raw - process to your taste and then output to final size - delete the originals (if you shoot jpg anyway there's no point in keeping the original)

Why shoot crop - shoot FF and then crop to taste when you have more time to evaulate best composition - same effect

The only issue is if you want to reduce the storage on your cards instead of your computer - but you'd only do that to save a bit of money on new cards surely and I dont see the logic in spending lots of money on a camera but v little on sufficient card space to store those images

I think for most the reduction in fps is a welcome necessity, if some are so concerned about storage space that they intentionally capture less than perfect images from a great camera then not being able to spray and pray should keep numbers (and space) down a bit

If space is such a factor then it's a financial issue and it would be more cost effective to shoot a P&S and hire a D800 when you need to

I think the D800 is a flexible camera that many people will use it different; like the op who is shooting crop modes like 1:2 and 1:5 for walk around and sports, etc and shooting full whack for pro / serious shoots - think this approach is extremely good.

Its basically up to each people who are shooting with theidr D800 on how to use it...

the D800 offers some nice flexibility. I have a D4 and a D7000 with no grip. I use both. when I want to go light I use the 7000 usually with the 16-85, 35, and 85 (sometimes a 135 or 180 and sb700 also). I could see having a D800 and using it for uber resolution/quality when I want/need, and maybe with the 20, 24-120, 50, and 135 or 180 when I want a relatively small kit (relative being the key). I would then have:

20-30 2.8 mini zoom for wide
24-180 4.0 vr zoom for walk around
50-75 1.4 mini zoom
135-202 2.0 mini zoom or 180-270 2.8 mini zoom

It would be bigger than the 7000 kit, but better potential quality, more, flexible ranges, better focus, etc. It would be a bit lighter smaller than the D4 and again more flexible.

maybe what I would really like to have is three systems. the 800, the 4, and the OMD with just a 12, 25, and 75 (24, 50, and 150 eq).

I look at it more like bring the elephant gun when you are hunting elephants and take the smaller gun when you are hunting rabbits. I like the choice of not having to shoot full frame for walk around pics I'm just posting on Face Book and being able to use the same camera for serious studio work when needed.

What I said above about the 800 would apply to the rummored entry level full frame with the following differences:

Probably less mini zoom range and flexibility if it is 24mp, but still some
Not as good a focusing, but still, I bet, good
Lighter than the 800

for me maybe a really good compliment to my D4.

these are good times for Photographers. so many good tools and choices.

What becomes smaller is the image in the viewfinder (in DX crop mode). This is not such a good idea IMO. One of the main motivations for FX cameras is the larger viewfinder image (in FX mode).

Full frame gives a different look . For walk around or facebook pics, use jpg but in FX. JPG small is 9MP. Small files, amazing quality, FX characteristics.

The choice between DX and FX shouldn't be about resolution, it should be about cropping or not, but that's my opinion.

I'll shoot FF and crop. By doing the DX thing you're wasting nearly half the sensor.

Is the center of a FF sensor sweeter (image-wise) than a crop sensor? I do not know.

I'm not a working pro but I do some serious work that require a high end camera, but mostly, I enjoy photography for photography's sake. I see the D800 as 2 cameras in 1 and like the flexibility of having options like NOT having to run a v12 ferrari at top speed when not on a race track :-)
buy a v12 ferrari and switch off 6 cylinders

makes a lot of sense ....

Makes sense, "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" but you got to admit that 15MP is still some pretty serious resolution and more than enough for non-serious scenarios and FB art critics around the world. And since all but 1 of my lenses are FF I can easily just change the quality on the fly if I see some speciall scene.

Maybe I don't understand, so please help me out.

If a D4 has 16 megapixels and the D800 Dx mode is 15 megapixels and if you don't care about the full frame, why is this an unacceptable way to use a D800? Is it unacceptable that the D4 is only 16 megapixels? Throw your DX lens on your D800 and have fun while still getting very very nice pictures. Why does that constitute a sin against nature?

The D800 was a lot of top end capability, this is true. A day at the amusement park with the kids and shooting 1,500 pictures may be suited to 6 fps but not need all the resolution muscle the camera offers. A beautiful woman can still be a fun date in her jeans and t-shirt. The fact that she can look killer doesn't mean she only gets to go out to events that she needs to look killer.

Tell me why I am wrong or that the OP is off base.

If I ever get a FF it would be nice to be able to take decent shots with the excellent Nikkor 10.5mm/f2.8 Fisheye.
