Great geo tagging on NEX , it works great and it is cheap!

Thanks for that review. I'll probably buy the app, but I also do enough international travel where I don't use my iPhone that I am thinking of spending $60 - $80 to get a little GPS tracker that I can attach to my camera bag or something. Probably not as convenient as having the file in Dropbox, but I don't want to use data on my iPhone when I am out of the USA.

I typically keep my data turned off when on international travel as well. You could still use this app and log tracks all day. I am not too sure how many it will hold, but I think it is quite a bit. Once back at the hotel, you could push the tracks to dropbox if you have a wireless internet connection. I suspect that worst case, you could wait a longer time to upload them when you get back home.

Like you... I am not opposed to buying a purpose built data-logger if this approach doesn't work. I just know that it will eventually be a piece of junk sitting the back of drawer someplace... so I am going to try GeoTagr for a while and see if it will cover my needs.

Only you can know your own habits, but I'm no more likely to leave my Holux GR-245 in the back of a drawer than I am to leave the camera - the two go everywhere together.

When this thread started I had a Holux M-241 which I replaced with a GR-245 I bought on ebay for £25. The attraction was threefold - it's waterproof, has a 28-hour USB-charged battery and has a useful large display.

The M-241 will sit in the back of a drawer as a backup though. Actually it hangs on a hook with my keys but the "back of a drawer" metaphor works better ;-)

How does this app work? If I take a picture on my NEX5 and have the app running. does it tag the files when i upload into my phone?

Also, if i use this on my upcomming trip Europe this summer will the app use cost me in my at&t phoe charges?

I was shocked how well the EyeFi does at geo tagging in the NEX 5n.

Worth having in your camera on vacation.
Aside from the cost, Eye-Fi only does so with Wifi signal strength. If you are shooting in the middle of a rural area, the precision is very low. If you shoot overseas where their database of hotspots isn't populated, you have no data. Your phone on the other hand, can give you exact GPS coordinates as well as cell tower geopositioning.

Then again, having your phone do this will kill your phone's battery so make sure you don't have an iPhone ;)

Hi all, interesting thread.
Does anyone know if GeoTagr will work with Lightroom 4.1?

Could I just export the file from my iPhone i.e. e-mail it to my MBP and import this in LR and have my NEX photos geotagged?

GeoTagr can email the file to you so you can import it. This works with Aperture. Do not know about Lightroom.

The other mode is that GeoTagr updates the files on a shared folder from your iPhone. So it changes the pictures that you have placed inside the shared folder.
