I have just started to use my new D100 and have been uploading RAW images from a card reader using Nikon View % and Photoshop 7. This seems to work OK . I would like to use the trial version of Capture 3 but can't seem to find out how to get images into it.
Nikon's "documentation" is of no help, at least to me,
Can anyone show me the way? Does it have any advantage over PS7?
Right now I am picking up images with view 5. Where do I go from there?

Stay with Nikon view. Just do a right mouse on the image and select edit which will get you into Capture 3 in edit mode. If you want to open another one in capture 3 you have to use file open which is pretty crude.

Cliff,

You can use the Nikon Transfer feature of Nikon View (included with Nikon Capture) to transfer images from your CF cards either with a card reader or by connecting your camera to your computer (with USB for a D100, or firewire for a D1/D1h/D1x.)

Since I use a Mac I'm not sure how you get the program to launch automatically on a PC. I'd check in the preferences and/or the manual. You might also try launching NV and selecting "launch nikon transfer" from the tools menu.

Transfer is only a small part of Nikon Capture's functionality, and it's also included in Nikon View. The main advantages, as I see it, of Nikon transfer are: It builds nice large file icons for the files when you transfer them, and it can be set up to embed color profiles in pictures taken with Adobe RGB.

Nikon Capture includes a full featured image adjustment program for NEF images (Nikon's raw file format.) It lets you change lots of different settings on NEFs such as white balance, sharpening, tone compensation, etc. It also lets you convert NEFs to JPEG or TIFF format, either one at a time or in batch.

There's also Nikon Camera Control, which lets you hook your camera to your computer (with USB for the D100 or firewire for the D1/D1x/D1h) and shoot "tethered." You can control most of the camera's settings, and capture pictures straight to your computer's hard disk. NC also supports time lapse photography, which is pretty cool. You can also use your computer to make changes to your camera's custom settings, and load custom tone curves.

Three ways I know of:
1) File-> Open menu - same as most Windows programs
2) ctrl-E or equivalent menu from Nikon View or Nikon Browser

3) drag & drop from Explorer or other file browser program, including Nikon Browser

This last choice even works to start NC3 program. You can drag a file onto a desktop shortcut and it will either launch NC3, or add this file to an existing NC3.

1. You can go to NV file, edit using other programs
2. NV edit, preferences, still image, use the following program (select NC)

Thanks to all who answered my request for info about Nikon Capture
I finally found Nikon's instructions in the HELP menu and now hve a pretty good picture of the program. As I don't plan to control the D100 with the computer I am wondering whether it provides any real advantage over Photoshop 7 which seems to be less complicated and which I am used to.\Cliff

Nikon Capture has some definite advantages over Photoshop only if you are editing NEFs. With Capture, you can change curves, white balance, sharpening, etc. without actually altering underlying pixels and the file size stays small. To do that in PS, you would need to convert to TIFF and add adjustment layers, and that means a minimum of 60 megabites (compared with around 8) when you save. Capture has the slight advantage that you can see the histogram when editing curves (not that big a deal and probably something that will be fixed with PS version 8). The problem with Capture is that it is not as stable as PS and as I mentioned in a previous post, editing and saving a NEF in capture will appear to disable the ability to open in 6 or 10 megapixel size with the PS Nikon NEF plugin. (but there is I workaround that I already mentioned).
