Raw File Conversion on the D-30...

I'm wondering the best way to convert raw files on my D-30. I'm using the software I got with the EOS 1D. It gives me the option of creating JPEG, 8 bit TIFF and 16 bit TIFF. What is the best way to store. I tried to create an 8 bit TIFF, and first I got a warning saying that the software couldn't support it.... I went ahead and the image was very dark. I'm wanting the largest possible file, I just don't know how to do it. What's the best way to convert the raw files? Also, my iMac is having a problem indexing the images. It's wanting to take upwards of 60 hours to write the indexing of the raws.

Are you using an iMac flat panel or a G3?

Raw files shouldn't take anywhere near that long to index, even on a G3. Also, what photo editing software are you using? Photoshop can handle some things with 16 bit Tiffs. I usually start with a 16bit tiff linear conversion and then go to 8 bit after doing my levels, gamma correction, as Photoshop won't support layers or a lot of other functions with 16 bit files.

Oh, are you using 9 or OSX? I'm using OSX on a flat panel and use the new OSX file viewer utility from Canon. You can download it from their web site, and it will work specifically with D30 files. You can also get a 9 version of it. If you convert from linear, your images will be very dark, and need some heavy post processing. Fred Miranda has one Photoshop action for 15 bucks, but I downloaded one for free, I just don't remember where. You can find it on this forum by doing a search for linear conversion.
Hope this helps.

Can't help with the Imac stuff. But if the converted image seems way way underexposed you've probably got the "linear" option checked. Don't convert in linear and you'll be OK. (Fred Miranda has actions that restore the gamut of a linear image - the argument is that their are circumstances where you get better shadow detail from a linear image).

So turn off the linear thingy. Got it.

if you woould like email me and I will send you some linear actions (photoshop use only) that work well with a D30

Personally I would download the newer file viewer from canon and use that instead then create catalogs with iview or something else (sorry, I am PC based so what I use does not work on macs but I hear iview is pretty good)

And as for taking that long something is wrong my 1DS files only take about 15 seconds each d30 should be way way faster.
