This forum with the endless 5D3/D800 debates is like a game of Whac-A- Mole

lots of fun. :(

Buy OMD EM5 and be done with.
I just bought 5D III (a truly astounding camera when judged on its own merits), but I keep looking at results with the OMD EM5. It too has superb performance, and I'm thinking of getting one for my small, light-weight camera. The price for camera and lens is less than I just paid for a Canon lens. The 5D III has much more capability, but there are many times for me when portability at the expense of capability is a good trade-off. The image quality trade off is not great, though of course the OMD is a crop camera; that is something that I can work around.

Next threads to take over soon

Individual threads for 1dx vs 5dIII, 5dII, MKIV, D800, D3s, D4s.. endless nonsense..

If that were the case I probably would have bought the D800 and saved money on the Nikon glass. 5d3 sensor is great for what I do, 5 fps is very welcome, silent mode is wonderful when needed, thumb wheel on back very convenient, and file sizes are manageable but then I don't print bulletin board size posters, and what I do priont I have never seen anyone get 4 inches away to squint to see if they can find a halo, a jpg artifact, or even if they can squeeze another bit of detail in a shadow.

I"ve shot with both cameras and for me the 5D3 was the one I fell in love with. waiting to try a 1D-X and from there will buy one or the other. it isn't all about the sensor at ISo100-400 for everybody. D800 is superb there. At ISO 12800 the 5D3 is cleaner and even useable for bird feathers. 6 fps is not exactly fast but it is much faster than 4 and going to the 1.2 crop mode starts to negate the noise aspects of D800.

I liked D800 just fine but I loved the 5D3 and going in I was fully expecting to want the D800. I was surprised because on here you only read about how bad it is.

Just wish more people would shoot with both before telling everyone else how great either one is or how bad. If I had liked the D800 better I would be waiting to get one and moving on. Those who really want D800 just order and enjoy.. it is available (when not sold out anyways). resell value on Canon glass is very good right now! And new nikon glass is cheaper than new Canon glass. No need to torture one's self about fact 5D3 is NOT the D800. But then vice versa is also true.. just get whichever one is what works best for you :)
...and the D800 had the 5D3 sensor, we'd have the same threads, but no one would be complaining about them. ;)

I would have no issue if Canon gave us the option of using an outside source only to give us the best sensor. Sort of like the film days, we had choice.

Ive shot with both.. above ISO400 I did not see any advantage to D800 sensor quality wise and did not shoot enough under ISO400 to judge there. Above ISO6400 5D3 was in my opinion better both detail and noise wise. For my tastes and needs the 22 MP sensor is perfect compromise between too much and too little, frame rate is acceptable ( 4 is not ) and the Af was superb. Add to that a very smooth well implemented silent mode when fame rate is less important than spooking off the target. I'll wait for 1D-X to come out but right now I think Canon may have made the 5D3 for me because I fell in love with it. Liked the D800, loved 5D3. They can't make a camera to please all.. if I had loved D800 I would have switched systems and saved money in doing so. if you really love the D800, life is short.. buy it and be happy :) Canon glass is selling for very high $$ amounts now and new nikon glass is often cheaper than new Canon glass.
