Raw + JPEG

I'm so upset with my D300...... I want to capture RAW and Fine JPEG at the same time. It just won't do it anymore. I have tried the reset and the remove battery while camera is on... neither works anymore. I'm going on a trip to Alaska so I will just have to shoot in JPEG and if it is a critical lighting situation, i will shot in RAW.
Maybe the D800 is looking better, if I can find one......
Has anybody else had the same issue with the D300????

What options DO you get when you try to set RAW+JPEG?

Personally, I quit shooting both. I always used RAW when making prints, or post-processing to do anything with the images, so the JPG's were just a waste of space.

Well the camera shows that I have selected RAW + Fine JEPG but after I review my captures, both are JEPG's. The camera captures RAW by it's self just fine... I'm heading on vacation so I wanted to capture both so I didn't have to think too much... I'm getting lazy with old age.... LMAO.

Drop by when you get to Alaska and we can look at it!

Shoot RAW. Don't think at all.

If you want non-processed JPG's, you can just use ViewNX2 to batch-convert them to JPG without changing any settings.

Personally, the first thing I do after downloading is to rate the images. I then convert (or post-process) only the higher-rated ones.

What transfer software are you using? I'm wondering if you are using some sort of software that is pulling the embedded JPGs out of the RAW files when it sees both RAW and JPG. I use DownloaderPro here.

I agree this sounds like a software issue. Did you recently change the way you are transferring to you computer?

RAW+JPG should work perfectly fine. Are you using a card reader to look at the card, or do you connect with a USB cable to your camera? If you're using a card reader, are you checking the card with Windows Explorer (or similar for your OS)? Check the file sizes -- the RAW files should be much larger than the JPG ones. If you're using Windows, make sure you don't have it configured to "hide known extensions" so that you can actually see the ".NEF" or ".JPG" file extension.

Your camera is doing exactly as you have asked. Use a card reader to transfer the files, or else use something like Nikon Transfer.

This is a known issue with older versions of Windows:

Try to set it up with to cards. The compact flash for RAW and the SD card for JPEG.
Steve Provisor
He is shooting with the D300. The D300 has only CF card slot, what you are suggesting requires the D300s.

If you can not figure this out, don't worry.

There is a free program that will extract the jpg from the raw file:> )) Every raw file has a embedded jpg. What you see on the lcd is a jpg.

The program is , jpg from raw. Google it..
Just enjoy Alaska and shoot an Eagle for me:> )))
Cheers

I am not the one having the problem. Besides, the OP asked about RAW+JPEG fine, which is not the same as the one embedded in the raw image. The embedded image is more compressed than that, otherwise you are right, basically there is no point in shooting RAW+JPEG, Pixelfixer can extract the JPEG from raw.
