A99 - why 24mp only?

If they do it right ( like they did the A900 ) and charge a fair price, it'll be a winner.
Unless, of course, it's an SLT design
I respectfully disagree. I cannot WAIT to replace my wonderful a77 with a full frame SLT and all that modern technology brings to the table. I will never, ever...ever... Go back to old-fashioned, obsolete optical, mirror-flapping, no WYSIWYG has-been technology.

I have been a serious photographer since the mid 1970's.... Other than digital, I cannot think of a technology that changed everything for me (for the better) than SLT/EVF has, and all it brings with it.... PDAF during 12fps shooting.... Autofocus during video, bring able to actually look trough the viewfinder shooting video instead of having to look at the back LCD. And only Sony seems to be able to deliver 1080p60 video. Nikon and canon don't seem to think that format exists. Really? 1080p30 is the best they can do?

I'll never leave SLT. I applaud Sony for coming up with something new, not rehashing old stuff
I agree with Rothwell. I bought my a77 6 months ago and I loved it from first day. But I had problem with the Instruction manual so just 4 weeks ago I bought Gary Friedmans 'Complete Guide to a77' and in 4 days I learn 10 times more than in 5 months. It was like having a new camera.

So I think that most people that are talking bad of SLT have never taken their time to understand the new system. And many just repeat what they heard from other "EXPERTS".

I think Sony has to make a clear separation between the intended two FF cameras.

Really two different market targets and usage ..........................................
Then came this rumour of A99 as cheap as possible and similar body than A77
Then D600 rumour as cheap as possible with similar 24mpx.
Perhaps Sony has to target 3 models:
24Mpx High end with integrated VG
36Mpx successor of A900/A850
24Mpx (or similar), small body, entry level
....

That's a good thinking. I also thought of the A99 24MP being the Flagship closer to the Nikon D4 in features and IQ ( i'd rather a separate VG though ). As an SLT/EVF it would be more high-tech ( my POV... ), faster and lighter ( D4 = 1340g, A900+VG = 1218g, A99+VG = 1150g? ) as well as lower priced .
The other two models ( 36MP and 24MP "entry" FF ) would be a given...!

Really? What noise does the camera make? The noise thing was a big reason I wanted an A57.

If its as loud as my old A550, I will really regret that I sold the A550
There is a lot to like about SLTs, and its more than just good autofocus during video.
1) No mirror slap = quieter operation
As a person who has been looking at the SLT design for a bit, I am very disappointed that they have not taken advantage of the absence of a flipping mirror to QUIET THE DARN CAMERA!

I shot a Nikon D7000 nest to an A55 and the Nikon was significantly quieter despite the flipping mirror. For me video is not of much interest but silent wedding venue operation is.

SAR was 85%-90% right about the A77 rumor specs and design! ;-)
You do realize that Sony was feeding them information to drive interest in the camera... right?
It does not matter how he gets his informations.
It only matters how reliable they are.
Indeed they are 80% reliable.

I believe the 20% wrong rumors are posted deliberately to give the site more credibility as a rumors site! ;)

It is pretty clear that Andrea get most of his rumors directly from Sony.

I hoped more for a 30 something mp a99, because that is what i need the most, but probably Sony cannot compete in the noise department at that high mp count with Nikon yet.
I say yet, because so far, there has been a pattern of Sony catching up later.

at 24mp, Sony today can probably deliver what even the most demanding cave shooters will be comfortable with.

So we have to wait for the 36mp Sony, which would have probably been killed by the d800, if introduced this year.

The a900 was killed by al the cave ahooters and reviewers for having just a decent noise performance...:

The shutter itself is quite noisy. It reminds me of my old Nikkormat Copal shutter that was all metal. Even when I locked up the mirror it made quite a clatter.

The Sony was not VERY noisy but it was a lot louder than I anticipated as I also owned Leica in the past. The Nikon, by comparison, was astonishingly quiet, notably quieter than the Sony as I fired them side by side.

For me, the promise of mirrorless or SLT cameras is the relative silence that can theoretically be acheived. Sadly, this has not been a priority for these cameras. I really need to shoot with silence as I often shoot in theaters, churches and at meetings where I am capturing candids of VIPs.

I don't care much about megapixels now when we have plenty of them!

When the A900 was came a lot of people hoped for a 16-18 Mp version of this camera, and the same happened when the A77 was introduced.

I think those are the folks that never buy a camera, since there is no low price/high quality model that fit their ultra-spesific needs.

a 36MP A88?

The 24MP would better work with a fast action shooter (faster bufferring). The better autofocus would go along with that. A higher resolution OLED viewfinder and a beefier battery.

An A77 level spec A88 at 36MP, but with maybe 7FPS maximum could be done at a $2000 price point.
why a88?
Aaah.... because you hope 2000$....
you would not buy it even at 1000 and even if its name was as low as A11...

it must have high ISO performance like the Nikon D4 or D3s. Sony is way behind in the high ISO game.

You have hit the nail on the head. Everyone seems to want infinite performance for free.
