I came across a couple of sites that suggested a simple test to see if your digital camera is capable of recording IR: Simply point your TV remote at your camera (while turned on, of course) and push one of the buttons on the remote. If you can see the remote's LED transmitter glowing purple-blue in your camera's LCD display, then your camera CAN record IR. The brighter the glow you see from the remote, the better chance you have of being able to take IR photos with your camera.
Well, I performed this test with my G3 at home and the LED showed up as bright at rudolph's nose on a crystal clear winter night. I didn't think about it at the time, but I should've checked to make sure it was visible in ALL shooting modes. But for now, I am very optimistic that the G3 can be used for IR photography. Now I just have to find a good 58mm IR lens for the G3's adapter.
