40D to 600D?

Hi,

Please can anyone help? I am thinking of replacing my Canon 40D with a 600D and plan to use my Canon 10-22 and 24-105L lenses. I notice that the specifications have generally improved except for the shutter speed. I would be grateful for any views of former 40D owners who have changed to the 600D instead of 60D/7D. Would this be a mistake or do you think this change is worthwhile? Should I wait for the new 650D which is due soon.

I did consider the G1X but I am not sure if the macro performance is good enough and don't like the risk of dust ingress.

Thanks in advance,

Martyn

What kind of photography do you do?

I upgraded to the 7D from 40D. Still learning what that 7D can do. I also bought (on a spark of insanity) a T3i. Use it as a back up.

There is a world of difference between XXD and TX series cameras in terms of features and interface. And while I have used both enough that when I switch between the two, it's still a difference.

The T3i has a better sensor and has better image quality than the 40D. But if you're gonna do more than hobbiest photography, you're not gonna want the T3i as your only camera.

The 60D will have a similiar, if not better AF, as the 40D. It took a step back in terms of FPS, but it is a great camera.

Just some random thoughts.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. My main interest is nature and sometimes airshow photography (just an amateur). Would the 600D/T3i have inferior focusing performance to the 40D? Apart from the plastic body would I notice any other indications of a step-down in performance?

I'm just a bit reticent about the 60D and risk of it being replaced as soon as I buy one.

Kind regards,

Martyn

I would go for the 60D for all the same reasons I chose the 40D over the 400D. Virtually the same sensor/image quality, but the x0D has much better viewfinder, ergonomics especially the QCD, faster frame rate, better build, and better AF (even if only at the center cross sensor the x0D adds "x" oriented high precision cross as well as "+").
I'm just a bit reticent about the 60D and risk of it being replaced as soon as I buy one.
600D is just as likely (and probably more likely) to be replaced this year. If I need to replace the 40D now, then I go for the better choice available now, the 60D. If I can wait 6-12 months, then I can either get the next-gen x0D, or get the 60D at close-out pricing.

IMHO, YMMV

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have a 24-105L - would this benefit from the 60D's cross type sensor?

Kind regards,

Martyn

That lens would be good on either camera. The 60D has all 9 AF points as cross-type. I believe they are f/5.6.

The T3i only has a the center AF as cross type.

Personally, I would go for the 60D. It's closer ergonomically and features to the 40D.

If you can try the cameras in your hand, I think that would help. I have a 7D and a 550D and for most purposes I prefer the 550D because it's lighter and smaller and the IQ is just as good. For things that move fast, I much prefer the 7D because of its higher shutter speed, higher frame rate, and much better AF and all-round better handling. I don't care much about the difference between viewfinders; the 550D is perfectly adequate. You can get used to the different controls on the 600D. I think , but don't know, that the 600D could handle an airshow.

I sense you do think highly of T3i as I do especially since the IQ is so high (equiv to older brethren) and its overachiever sensibility. Only gearheads and fanboys damn T3i with faint praise, and in order to do that they ignore incredibly high performance as well as persnickety critics' of the world high, high praise -- it's not like it's second rate.

I have 40D and 2 month ago I bought t3i/600D. I also thought about 60D instead, but money were an issue and after reading every possible info on the web I decided to buy 600D which has same censor, same hardware specifications including swinging LCD. It is not as well build, but I am not planning to use it as weapon. So I bought 600D save myself $250 and since I wanted to start shooting HD video I used $250 to buy accessories for video. You can see videos on http://beekeeperstories.blogspot.com

I shot all that with t3i in the last few weeks. Of course, if I have more money, I'll buy 7D which is formidable machine, but...

Nice post. Took me a second to catch it.

The T3i serves a purpose. Just as the 7D does. I use it a lot now because it's not as heavy as the 7D. For static shoots, like portraits or general walk-around-photography, the T3i does take some great pics.

For an air show (and most sports), I wouldn't recommend it. The T3i is only 3.7 FPS. The AF is not as fast, either.
