I had my doubts but now I´m a believer! For everyone who has no idea why he should use NEF and nothing but NEF all the time I put some information and comparisons on my website under:

Definitely agree. Good site, very informative. Thanks for sharing. But, it's too hard to read.

I think that it is a simple question depending on what your trying to accomplish

For fine art NEF give you the ability to change white balance, and exposure after the shot. It also does not degrade the quaility of the image by compressing it, also has a smaller file size than TIFF.

Ok,Ok! You got me thinking about goin from Fine Jpg large to Nef which Iused to shoot. This is OT kind of, but maybe you can help. I reloaded NV4.0.3 and Capture 2. Shot Uncompressed NEF with a D1X. Opened in NV,trasferred to capture and the White Balance option is "grayed out"..can't use it. I can't figure out what I've done wrong, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lou

I prefer Bibble for its easy of use and the bold colors.

Lou, did you click on the red X at the top of the White Balance palette to enable it's functions?

When you experiment a bit with NEFs, there really isn't any question as to which format to shoot in - unless one is severely challenged by disk space/memory at a particular moment.

Your nice site (I agree it's hard to read) gives some good reasons. I would like to add another. Try using Fred Miranda's DRI (Dynamic Range Increase action) http://www.fredmiranda.com/DRI/index.html for a wonderful reason to use NEFs.

This action helps automate a great technique that only requires ONE frame if shot in NEF. Simply adjust the EV for a high and a low exposure, use Fred's action and get simply amazing results! I was constantly bugged by white skies and blown out highlights till I discovered this.

Thank you very much. If I got you right this thing performs like a ND grade filter and darken the sky to compensate a too high contrast between land and sky in landscape photography. If this would work with a single image this would be amazing. I will try it as soon as a get my creditcard receipt or are there demos available for Fred Mirandas PS plugins?

THANKS!

Your understanding is correct.

There are no user demo versionsof the action(s) but it only costs $8.50. There are illustrations on Fred's site.

Joachim --- What a treat to see your images from Ireland... when I went there (drove from Dublin, south, then west and loop back to Dublin--for an Irish Coffee at Donohugh's Pub on Lower Baggot St.) I didn't have a DSLR and got "fair resolution" pic's... can't wait to go back with my D100.

Thanks for the look.

As far as the grey text? I don't think switching to white would hurt the feel... altho I didn't mind the grey.

I didn't have any trouble reading your site. Or have you changed it. It's not as clear as the white on black in dpreview.com, however. If you want to make it easier to read, using a lighter shade of grey would probably do it and still keep your look.
