I do not post images very often anymore and my homepage has not been updated for ages, but getting to it, real life is a very busy place and has been for a long while.

First step has been getting an air to air session for a commercial airline up, the images are publish and released by the customer, so I am now allowed to show a few here.

For those interested in a reading a little on the background and the assignment, then it is right here:

for those just in it for the images, this is the place to go:

Thanks for looking.

Comments and questions are as always welcome :)

Very nice work there Thomas!

When I opened your post, I expected to see pictures from an airshow, but instead I saw something much better. Great work, wonderful pictures, it looks like a lot of fun.

I see you took these with a k5. Didn't yu also have a nikon kit? If so, why did you choose to use the pentax?

Thanks,

jm_mac

Really one of a kind images. Vast land greenlands needs an airline for sure.

Must have been an interesting assignment.

The FA 43 is on my to get list at some point..

Tusind Tak for turen!

great images, watched them all.
what a job, we can only dream about snow and ice here in Western Australia
kind regards

Coming from you, the sentence "I had a healthy dose of respect for the skills of the pilots flying for Air Greenland before, but this experience kind of put those skills in perspective, I would not have been able to do my job without their world class flying." really put it in perspective ! Especially when we consider what you've done for this assignment ;)

But that stress and adrenalin seems well rewarded : beautiful unusual pictures as usual !

You can really thank Lasse and the pilots ! I would not do it for all the tea in China ;) or all the money in world ! Thanks for sharing this adventure and your pictures with us

It was a challenge alright, but we nailed it pretty good.

I will try explaining it.

The hint to why I used pentax is in the focal lengths and the in body stabilisation.

Nikon simply have not got anything to match a pentax prime with stabilisation at these focal lengths.

I worked from the best possible platform, a sliding door equipped AS350 B2, But at 125-130 knots air speed, it does vibrate (it is it max speed with the sliding door open). once you lean out it is the equal to trying to sit still in wind blowing at 125 knots, that is quite the hurricane by any standard.

I simply needed the SR to keep images tack sharp in the 1/100-1/160 range necessary to get the amount of rotational blur in the propellers and even with SR it required quite a lot of focus on my own bod in relation to the helicopter frame and the wind pressure to make it all work out.

Secondly the compact nature of the pentax system, allowed me to shield it better from the wind preassure with my own body.

That there IMHO is no lenses in the Nikkor line up that would equal the renderings from the FA43ltd or FA*24, is a valid reason in its own right :) and those two focal length were perfect matches to the aircraft to helicopter distances the pilot would agree to.

I just may have found a Nikkor coming somewhat close to the FA43, or one I like nearly as much, but still the FA43 is the primary reason I still shoot pentax.

Each system has a set of unique lenses, Pentax has IMHO the FA limiteds and the DA21ltd.

Nikon has the 14-24/2.8, the AIS 50/1.2, the 135/2DC and as I have recently discovered a 60/2.8G.

Very nice job. We usually see photos of them taken from land, with a long tele and these ones are really different, in a good way for sure.

It is plane, boat or foot up here, so yes we do :)
Must have been an interesting assignment.
One of the more interesting ones for sure

It is a reason to shoot pentax in its own IMHO

Well, I dare say I had the easier job on this one in think, the pilots and lasse the more important ones. Lasse had my safetylines and lens changes covered. The pilots worked really hard to keep everything the way i needed them to bag the images.
But that stress and adrenalin seems well rewarded : beautiful unusual pictures as usual !
Adrenaline and stress is part of the job and this was one interesting one.

I know, we are only as good as the people we work with.

Thanks for looking and the compliments. I have another though slightly warmer session booked in the next week or so, different aircraft different images and above all warmer working environment :)

Thanks for the detailed information. I love hearing how and why people do things or use certain equipment (I guess that's the techie in me). Your reasons (and results) say a lot about Pentax and its SR. Did you shoot manual or auto focus for this shoot? Looking forward to seeing more of your edgy fashion shots as well.

Fantastic viewing angle and nice color contrast. Like 1 the most because the mountains in the background, but all photos are superb. Thank You for sharing

Great photos in very adverse conditions my friend. Must have been bone chilling cold for that..... hope you dressed warm!

How do you find the FA*24 sharpness across the frame? I love the FOV of my old K24mm and if Pentax fails to make a 24mm WR lens in the future I am going to have to decide between the FA* and the DA 21......
