The best camera is the one you have with you and that works !!!

Next month is snake time. Hell the things you mentioned frighten the hell out of me. There is nothing more frightening than a Cape Cobra poping its head up and looking at you. Or a green mamba slithering in the branches a few feet from your head.

The snake is normally more afraid of you than you of it. Both parties normally engage reverse gear rapidly. You normally only see puff adders when you stand on them or nearly stand on them. :)

If it makes you feel any better it looks like my shutter on the E5 broke about 45 minutes ago. At least I get to use the extended warranty I bought.

Sorry I nearly missed this one.

Ieeesh sorry to hear about that . I do know what it feel like. Mine is under warranty and will have an Olympus repair. I also have a MACK 2 year extended repair warranty on it after the 1 year is up. For a change something broke in month 11 and not month 13 like it normally does.

These shutters are becoming a hassle and a worry . That is the fourth one I have heard that has broken this month. 3 X E-5 and a E-30 which uses the same shutter. Mine is off to Europe and will be gone for probably a month.

except maybe a death adder
in fact all the stingys and death by small bites seem to be out here
http://www.avru.org/general/general_mostvenom.html
but the death adder scares me the most by its behaviour
it wont move when you approach it
it wont back off on confrontation
it can swim
and the thing seems to be able to hunt at night

on a no contact training recce in the bush that I remember,

a soldier in this unit lay down to eyeball a location with field glasses but had unknowingly lay upon a snake.

It took a minute to begin to move where it decided the best way to go was out still under his body and out between his folded arm and his face

they dont hand out medals for stuff like that,
........but they ought too...

A month is a good long wait. I'll get mine sent back after about a week. I miss it, though, because this is prime bird migration season and I don't have any long lenses for my GH2 (and the 50-200 on that is dog slow). Not sure what the deal is on the shutters. We are in year three of my students shooting like crazy with six 520's and so far not a single mechanical problem.

Shutter malfunction (3c85) on my e510 @ 20,461 clicks. What's with the E-series & their shutters? :-(
--
Hey, take it easy on the E-series. :-] My E-1 and E-330 are still running just fine!

E-5 too... though I have to hope I didn't get a dud shutter, as I didn't go for the extended warranty.

My E-510 shutter was in trouble after 180k clicks. I had it replaced for around USD 125 2 years ago.

Wow that was a good run on the shutter. The E-510 design life is only 50K clicks. You got a Extra 130K freebee click. :)

Indeed. I own a ridiculous amount of gear so at any time I could be out and about with one of three 4/3 DSLRs, one of four different m4/3 cameras, a Sony NEX-3, a Sigma DP2s, a Fujifilm X10, a Nikon P5100, or if I'm at the office I might also use my emergency Pentax K20D or Nikon D3100. Don't even get me started on lenses, lighting, any other accessories.

Honestly, although there are things that I love and hate about every camera I own, when the time comes to create images and record memories all that matters is that I have a camera (ANY camera) with me.

My wife hates carrying a camera with her but sometimes she is out with our kids when I'm not with her and the only thing she has to record a precious moment is her camera phone. In those situations it's better to have a less-than-perfect image from a camera phone than no photo at all.

It's easy for us to get obsessed with new camera specs and lenses here in the forums but at the end of the day the most important thing (from a photographic perspective) is that you have a camera with you and it works.

Howzit John.

Long time no hear.

I was strangely relaxed when the shutter broke. I though its just one of those things you can't really get cross with a machine. When the foul language started is when I realized I had left the battery chargers at home. This was directed mainly at myself ( and for about a minute or so anyone in the area ) . My wife did not say a word THEN I got that later with " And whose fault is this". any way maybe one lives and learns. If you are going to take a backup make sure you have the stuff with it.

I am going to Kruger park next week end so you can imagine how much Junk I am taking with. So far it's the E-5 / 30 , bigma , 50-200 , EC14/20 , 12-60 , TWO battery chargers 8 X BLM1'S. Binocs X 2 Beans bag , Small Tripod. ETC

I was kind enough ( yea right) to put a small kit together of the E-620 and 18-180 and 4 X batteries and a flash for my wife to use as a second shooter. I got the " I though I was going to use the SX220. " . " You can use the E-620 as it's a much better camera and WE will use the SX220 for video , and I have put 2 extra batteries and the charger in the bag. " say I. I got the look.

Its strange how after all these years of marriage my wife still thinks I am selfish and up to something devious even when being kind.

As we have a 50KG limit for the 2 of us traveling so its going to be interesting to see what gets left behind ( Again) . Some of the camps we are going to have no restaurant etc and you have to take every thing with you . food utensils etc. we buy the food locally on the trip from the airport to the park though.

I Have one of these Poncy Photographic vests with lots of pockets. The Only time I have ever used it was at a airport when my hand luggage was over weigh. I whipped it out and stuffed every thing into the pockets. They did say I did not need to try and stuff the laptop in the back pouch. I must have looked a sight as I am no the smallest of people. I looked like the Michelin man that had a serious case of giant sized warts.

Any way thanks for the note. One would think that when you get older one wold get wiser.

Na that's boring. And any way I have to give my wife a conversation piece and there no one else to play the village idiot.

You can never have enough equipment. :)

I have a long suffering wife who puts up with my antics. She does not really complain about the equipment I drag around. She will often help with the dragging. She has given up the 'no camera' outings and doing the body search as she recons as long as it discreet PS its better than me trying to take multiple shoots and having to zoom with my feet with my cell phone. Take the shoot and put it away for ( awhile ) she realizes is simpler .

Actually after this debacle I have put together a small ' Survival " kit bag with charger's ( All the slow speed ones that come with the camera." one of each battery type a 4 GB CF Card and 4 GB SD card , lens pen etc. This will join the first aid kit and 300mm Soligor manual focus lens I have in the spare wheel well of my car.

AS you say we can have all the equipment and all the high spec stuff and but if its not working is useless. The part we all strive for is when it all works. I become very complacent with equipment. I am in the IT industry and some times hear " It should not fail because its brand new." I reply that every thing fails even new stuff. Maybe I should listen to myself. :)

Thanks for posting
