***Challenge***

Hi Peggy,

I used to partake on the DPChallenge site but it got to be a bit too much after a while and it wasn't fun anymore, there were too many submissions for most weeks. I think it would be fun to do it here because we have a smaller (or it appears to be) community.

The only downside that I see with it is that there would have to be someone willing to be a moderator and handle the maintenance of a site to do this. Also I dont know if we could host on pbase or have a dedicated site. I guess I need to take a visit over to the Oly forum and see how they do it.

On the Olympus Form they do Challenges. They seem to be a lot of
fun and the people that participate say that they learn things
about their cameras and photography in general. Would there be any
interest for such here?
Peggy

I have participated in and even won a challenge over at the Canon Forum, they are fun, if the topic is good.

I have no idea how these are setup to start out, most use a Pbase account to host the images and then there is another server that handles the voting. Pbase is going to start charging a fee, I don't know how this will effect the challenges.

The other option is to crach one of the oters. What we could do is put out the word when a challenge starts at the Canon forum or any of the others, and just have all the Fuji entries go in the Exhibition gallery, then have our own voting here at the Forum instead of the seperate voting booth site.

Just some ideas. JimMPS over at the Canon forum may know how to get one started, I could ask him.

My brother is pretty active on the Olympus Forum and I am sure he would help us too.

I have very strong mixed feelings on this. I occasionally participate in the challenge on the Canon Forum.
  • Most of the topics do not interest me. The worst topic I have seen is the current one, post a photo of something that is hard to identify. An interesting game, but not about photography.
  • The voting is as much about popularity as photography.
  • The photos are rarely discussed, so you do not learn what you could. This is particularly true of discussing the technique used and art influences that lead to the photo.
  • Since the entire group votes, the voting is very diluted and a pore statistical sample.
I have no objection to your doing this and I will occasionally participate.

I definitely see your point. Some subjects would not be of interest to some while they would be great for others. As hard as you try sometimes they just are not as good as you might have wanted them to be. So there would be good subjects that would be very popular and there would be not so good less popular ones.

As for voting, that is just one of the hazards, it isn’t like there is a million dollars at stake or anything like that. It would just be for fun and what you might learn.

I think everyone should be encouraged to explain the how and why of their photo. That is how we could learn.

On the Olympus Talk Forum Challenge we do not show names until after the voting is over.

and art influences that lead to the photo.
We do not have any commenting on the pictures while the voting is going on and then after the voting we start a Discussion Thread just for that reason. We do have to bump it up some times.

This sounds fun... I have access to disk space for this (along with the mugshot page). Maybe we can come up with a simple version where everyone can email me the photos, I'll put them on a web page, and construct a simple voting mechanism - maybe based on email address or something. If there's enough interest in it, I'll see what I can come up with.

I like the idea of not revealing the names of the photographers until the voting is complete.

I like the idea. There isn't enough talk about photos and technique here lately (there are samples, retouching and other forums, I know....). Hence my limited presence - should anyone have noticed.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to participate actively in the organizational part, but I would be happy to submit the occasional photo and comment on other people's submissions.

Keep me posted.

Sounds like fun! Never did that in 1.5 years here...

Just don't use mountains for a challenge, none of those in this country :-)

btw, I'm for anonymous contributions until it's over.

Ok, let's do this! I'll work on getting a web page set up this weekend. In the mean time, let's figure out how we're going to do it - please reply to this if you have feedback on any of the items below:

1) I figure we'll have a time period to submit photos (two weeks, maybe?) then a shorter voting period after that. Sound ok? Initially, we'll set up some guidelines for photo size, file size, etc., then submissions can be emailed to me (more on that when we get it going).

2) Should the submissions be visible to everyone as I receive them, or all at once, at the end of the submission period?

3) Should the names of the people submitting the photos be posted with the photos during voting, or displayed after voting is complete?

4) Should voting be done by choosing one, or by ranking top 5 or something like that?

After voting is complete, the web page will display the results, who voted for what, etc.

What have I missed?

I don't think we'll be examining individual pixels, so 800x600 should be fine. You could also specify file type (JPEG?) and compression (Photoshop level 8?) or a max file size. One challenge every 3-4 weeks sounds good to me.
2) Should the submissions be visible to everyone as I receive them,
or all at once, at the end of the submission period?
No preference.
3) Should the names of the people submitting the photos be posted
with the photos during voting, or displayed after voting is
complete?
I would wait until the voting is over to disclose names - seems more honest that way, although it's less of a personal thing then.
4) Should voting be done by choosing one, or by ranking top 5 or
something like that?
How about rating every picture submitted on a scale of 1-10? If that's too much voting, you could appoint a number of judges who evaluate every picture but don't participate in that challenge.
After voting is complete, the web page will display the results,
who voted for what, etc.

I like the idea of evaluating each picture. On Olympus they have points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th and then add up the points.
