When does CA amazon tax start?

California spends most of its money on politicians, crooks, and cheats. Oops, same thing.

We have a state sales tax. A city sales tax. A property sales tax. A doing business sales tax. An office supplies sales tax. A gas tax. A phone tax. And a tax on all the taxes. There's so many taxes no intelligent corporation bothers to hang around. You know Apple and Silicon Valley? Out of state to avoid taxes.

Our parks are closed. People are being fired. The courts are being closed. Freeways are jammed with no new ones in sight. Yet they still have money to consider a 100 billion train that doesn't go anywhere people want. Rapid transit that manages to slow things down.

Why are taxes being raised at the same time that services are being cut? Inefficiency and corruption are the only answer.

What has California done for me? Absolutely nothing.
I know this is off topic but it needs to be said here. California state government provides valuable services that need support of the public. I agree it’s nice to avoid the sales tax but someone has to pay for UCLA, UC Berkeley, and the other state universities as well as the community college system. California also provides some of the best support services for low income seniors as well as a medical insurance program for those with pre-existing conditions. Where do you suppose the money comes from?

Well . . . you could always move somewhere else!

That is what most people do when they don't like where they live.

Yet it never seems to occur to any government entity to look for ways to save money. It is, I know, an unusual suggestion but one that should at lest be tried. The entitlement programs in the US represent a tremendous strain on the budget yet no one dares to take any action for fear of the wrath of the voters.

There is a simple answer to all this sales tax and state collection. And it works!

An across the board federal sales tax is needed. Say 10%. everything has the tax applied regardless of who sells what to who. Then the feds simply redistribute the tax to the states based on some formula.

Eliminate state , city, county etc taxes and replace it just one tax that applies to all sales. In store or on the internet.

It wont happen in the USA but it has worked in many other countries.

In a few years I'll be moving to Hong Kong. Minimal taxes. This year every resident got a $800 refund from the government. Despite the low tax rate, they couldn't spent it all. Subways get built in a year - not a decade. Trains are finished while we are still talking about them. You don't need to own a care.
Well . . . you could always move somewhere else!

I like the weather. The people. The work. The scenery. I just don't like the government here.

Mass arrests of bankers and their fellowship is going to end it this year.
Enough is too much. It will be shock and Ahhhhh and never again in history.

Tax gets the sacred Axe as a crime against life. Beyond above got final say and those below panic to infinity that considers politeness a waste of time. We are out of time!
I was under the impression that Amazon already started charging sales tax for CA. But I haven't seen it in my recent purchases yet.

Does anyone know when it starts? (or is this issue still "open"?)

Yep, I think you need to move. No sense living in a place you don't like.

What are you waiting for? A one way ticket to Hong Kong doesn't cost that much and I'm sure the Chinese government will be more to your liking.

From the Los Angeles Times dated November 3, 2011:

"In California, Amazon recently abandoned a much-criticized effort to repeal a new Internet sales tax law passed by the state legislature this year. Instead, the company cut a deal with the administration of Gov. Jerry Brown to start collecting and remitting California's 7.25% sales tax, plus local sales taxes, beginning Sept. 15, 2012."
Good for California!

Now if only we could get the other 49 states to follow their lead!

Yes, it won't happen in the USA. The federal government has no authority to prohibit the states and other locales from levying taxes.

What's "Good" about it?

The Constitution explicitly prohibits States from collecting import taxes unless (a) those taxes are approved by Congress, and (b) the proceeds of the taxes (after inspection) go into the Federal Treasury (not the State one).

I don't see how so-called "use taxes" satisfy the U.S. Constitution. The whole point of "use tax" is to tax interstate sales (imports) for the benefit of the State Treasury. I have not seen one State yet impose "use tax" and say "out of the goodness of our hearts and respect for the Constitution, we are giving all of the proceeds to the Federal Treasury to go towards reducing the national deficit".

Then how about you go on a national crusade to stop the individual states from forcing local businesses to collect sales taxes.

After all . . . aren't these local businesses the ones who actually create jobs in your local area for you and your friends to work at to make a living buying all of this stuff that you don't want to pay sales taxes on?

If people don't have jobs . . . then those same people can't afford to buy anything because they won't have any money to buy anything.

You can see where I'm coming from with this statement . . . can't you???

Why should I have to go on a national crusade to force State Governments to obey the Constitution? The Constitution is the supreme law of the land.

Maybe it is you who should go on this big national crusade to change the Constitution (by Amendment) to allow this taxation you want. I'm sure the States would be quite receptive to ratifying it, if it made it past Congress.

True, true. Californians will not be happy till all the rest of us join them in their cesspool. Taxes, for those who have to pay them, just aren't nearly high enough.

You already must pay sales tax, even if amazon doesn't charge it.

It's called use tax, see page 14 of instructions for 540/540A forms.
We already covered this earlier in this topic thread.

Problem is . . . the use tax is an 'honorary' system!

And apparently, most people, especially those here who prefer to make internet purchases, are not honest people!

And this thread proves just that!

Do you know how to read? I like California just fine. I just don't like the government. Maybe the government can run a factory in China? Oops, they'd be shot for incompetence on the 1st day. It's an American tradition, right, and privilege to dislike the government. For those of us with ancestors who fought in the revolution, it's almost genetic. Obviously, you're not an American, or you've arrived very lately off the boat.

Funny how the ostriches have their head in the sand, and can't tell the difference between socialistic "free" country and a free "socialistic country. Typically these people live in their own little world, and haven't experienced anything more than 10 miles from where they were born. Yup, taser me, arrest me, fingerprint me, restrict me, beat me, yippie, I live in the land of the free, and by golly, that's good enough for me, unlike all those poor Chinese.

I mean, can you believe China doesn't even let their residents film police beating up innocent civilians? And they arrest people with no warrant and put them in secret jails and torture them? And they have surveillance cameras on corners? Those rigged elections and voter fraud, tsk tsk. Oops, sorry, wrong country, I meant the good old US of A.

Ostriches. Gotta love 'em. Couldn't spell free if it was written on their forehead.
Yep, I think you need to move. No sense living in a place you don't like.

Ah, change the subject instead of replying. Because you know I'm right, and you don't have the guts to stand up for what you believe in.

I have the choice to go anywhere I want. I have the freedom to complain. I have the right to point out when the government isn't right, to make it better for the majority.

People like you guys s/b exported.
