I like this part: "It's higher capacity and faster available transfer speed". Wonder how much faster it will be.

Sounds like $$ to me. We will be paying for copyright protection tech we don't need.

Compare now the price of ordinary MS and MS with magic gate.

One of the first things I did this morning was check the prices of these new sticks. The Magicgate's are $20 more than MS in the current capacities for 32, 64, and 128.

I wouldn't worry about it on a 1 gig stick. Isn't the price of a magic gate stick a fixed amount over a normal stick, it doesn't depend on size??? At the price of this stick, what's another $20???

Interesting indeed, ran the page through google's translation thing, and came up with this on the last paragraph:

"The sticks have the same dimensions as the old MEMORY stick, are however equipped with a parallel CONTROLLER, which is to offer faster file transfer up to 20-20-mal. Older devices with MEMORY stick module cannot select the new "pro" therefore. Already now however some devices are in the trade, which for the new pro-tick are prepared, among them the digital cameras Dsc f 717 and Dsc f 77 as well as some devices of the VAIO Notebook series. The sticks to 1 GByte should be available starting from March -- in the future variants with up to 32 GByte storage capacity are angedacht for Multimedia applications. ( sha c't)"

An english translation for those that can't read german.

First rumors had already oozed one month ago. But before the secret read around the new MEMORY stick pro of Sony on the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas was finally ventilated, the successors into the years of the MEMORY stick come are to be admired now on the homepage of the Sonystyle Shops the USA. Under the product designations Msx-256, Msx-512 and Msx-1g are to give it starting from March now finally to sticks with more than 128 MByte storage volumes. The sticks have the same dimensions as the old MEMORY stick, are however equipped with a parallel CONTROLLER, which is to offer faster file transfer up to 20-20-mal. Older devices with MEMORY stick module cannot select the new "pro" therefore. Already now however some devices are in the trade, which for the new pro-tick are prepared, among them the digital cameras Dsc f 717 and Dsc f 77 as well as some devices of the VAIO Notebook series. Most relieving, since I just picked up a 717 in November! Thx D

That will give
  • 12.800 pics of Fine 2560X1920
  • 25.600 pics of Standard 2560X1920
-...........
  • 404.480 pics of Standard 640X480
Now how many time the last figures max out the 717 counter...

And lastly the 32GB will give you 25 hours of movies at highest quality.

I am getting bored.......(-:

It is kind of sad that the F707 is being left behind on the use of the pro memory sticks... but well, Sony always does that anyway, don't they?.

I have not upgraded to F717, but don't really plan to in the short term... I guess I'll prepare to buy a bunch of slashed price 128MB sticks instead :)

Hopefully it will only start out being pro.

If the sticks are fast enough to start saving MPG2 streams from consumer camcorders, then they will increase the market dramaticaly and hopfully the prices will come down soon once they ramp up production and start craking out the millions of these things we all want.
Yea, "PRO" means that You will need big, fat wallet ;-)

all manufacturers do this, when updating media that don't have onboard controllers -- that is to say, media controlled by the camera's driver. thus all "smartmedia" (oxymoronic name, considering...) cameras as well have a posted limit as to which generation file system they know how to handle. if someone released a 256 meg version (which they won't), no camera on the market would know what to do with it. XD will be the same. it's only compact flash that's different....and even then, the old 64megger camera's don't do well with new cards, and most apparently won't know how to read the 3gig+ ones. although that could be rumor; don't quote me on it.

yeah, it sucks, and yeah, a simple firmware upgrade Would solve the problem...but the industry is currently not so nice across the board. not just sony.

Someone has to be left behind. As someone who bought their 707 over a year ago, this news does not bother me in the least. If I was looking to buy during the past couple of months, and I choose the 707 because it was a better deal and Sony kept their mouth shut about the pro format, then I would be a bit angry at Sony, the company.

But then again, I happened to me when I bought our 1995 Rodeo, a month later, during the summer of all times, Isuzu came out with the 1995 1/2 Rodeo. Totally redesigned. Talk about being upset...
