CanonRumors-T4I Announcement Very Soon

The Canon T3(no i) could use an update too. As it was, it was outspeced by the "old" Nikon D3100.

Normally only CR3 are accurate and normally CR3 comes only a day or so prior to a real announcement in which an event and props are being set up somewhere, etc anyways so it doesn't give you any real lead-time.

The vast majority of these rumor sites are just garbage used to drive advertising and click-throughs.

On the other hand a touchscreen panel that doesn't include leading-class CDAF = garbage. But if it does include leading-class CDAF or involves a new PDAF/CDAF hybrid sensor, than things start getting really interesting. Same thing for auto-focus during video...it needs a revolutionary change in their AF mechanics and not just faster CDAF then their industry losing CDAF performance.

CR2 rating is rather meaningless, your weather forecast is more reliable. It needs a CR3-4 rating to be credible, with CR5 = for sure 100%. CR2....hum....is really a waste of everyone's time.

Beside, Canon usually release its camera either in Feb/Mar or Sept/Oct time frame to match the Japanese CP+ and Photokina trade shows. I suspect it's more of a CR1 than CR2 rumors.

Not likely :( You should try Canon 500hs "touch-screen" point/shoot, its terrible. I have no faith in canon when it comes to touch-screen. Panasonic and Olympus are much more advance in the touch-screen tech.

Agree 100%. In my opinion, canon should just COPY NIKON . Give me a Nikon J1/V1 hybrid PDAF/CDAF technology, but with canon's bigger 1.5crop cmos sensor = winner

While I want canon to succeed, I'm afraid T4i is yet another warm-over T3i. Canon is a very conservative company, so don't expect Nikoneque Bottom-up strategy of a super-competitive entry level dslr. Canon will keep T4i inferior to 60d. My guess is a just a slight bump to 20mp from 18mp, some art filters like Olympus, more video compression option and that's it.

Another year, another model. Should follow the auto industry to use model year instead, less confusing for consumer.

They've changed their rating system. There isn't a CR4 or 5.

It's CR0, CR1, CR2 and CR3.

They consider CR3 to be fact. So, CR2 is next highest. If they are at all credible, CR2 should mean it is fairly certain.

On AmazonUSA, the T2i is now down to $549.00, so perhaps that model is being cleared out before a T4i announcement.

(The CanonUSA web site lists the T2i as a current model. When the T4i is announced, the T3i should be pushed down in price, and the T2i discontinued.)

A composite from the rumors at northlight and canonrumors:

It will be 18 mp

It will have an "improved" sensor -- (my hope is that means more dynamic range at low ISO, not just improved high ISO performance)

It will have an improved viewfinder with new features that will provide a selling point for optical viewfinders.

One of the kit configurations will feature an 18-135 zoom update that will have quiet AF for better use in video.

And other notions such as improved ergonomics, new video features, improved af in video...even a touchscreen (?!) -- please no touchscreen, Canon! Are you trying to get me to switch to Nikon?

Or, will it be the same sensor with the Digic 5 processor that will improve out of camera jpegs but not raw?

I would still consider that a nice thing to have. I also would expect the Digic 5 to improve the fps performance some.

It will be improved in the same manner that the 5DMKIII is improved. Unless they realized that people make a big deal about pushing shadows, went back to the drawing board, and put out another sensor with far less read noise, etc.

But realistically it will only be improved as much as the 5DMKIII is over 5DMKII if not less. I say just barely enough to stay in the running as long as other features and ergonomics are a home run (i.e. better viewfinder).

An improvement on the viewfinder would be most welcome as would better dynamic range. And who doesn't want better AF esp in liveview, much less video? Can't help but wonder are we putting the cart before the horse in anticpating a T4i?

Correct, Canon are hugely conservative. Judging from their behaviour lately, I wonder how big a player they'll be next decade. I mean, no new APS-C sensor for three years! Passively relying on customers being locked in to their system is no way to run a successful tech business in this day and age, imo.

Its rare, but I really hope I'm WRONG about canon being conservative. In fact, I dare canon to prove me wrong, give me:
  • a new improved 19 points AF with 5 x-type ( above 60d )
  • the big 0.95x viewfinder from 60d
  • faster FPS than 60d or match it
  • deeper jpeg/raw buffer
Still, I don't think I'll get any of them. Canon 60d has become the bane of Rebel's existence.

Agree, T4i would be a worthy upgrade is canon can manged to increase its Viewfinder Size from the currently-reduced (0.85x) in T3i to 60d's (0.95x). I don't need a huge 1:1 viewfinder from canon 7d, but give me a 60d' viewfinder and we're talking

If canon insist on implementing the Canon 60d CAP and restrict rebel so it does not exceed 60d. I'll be okay if canon can make a mini-60d :
  • same viewfinder
  • same FPS
  • just in a much smaller body. I find 60d unnecessary bulky

It is difficult to implement a better optical viewfinder as it all boils down to optical physics where the larger cameras fit a larger pentaprism block, etc. So in order to be smaller than the 60D but still have a great viewfinder it would need to stop looking like a curvy Canon and more like old school flim SLRs where the pentaprism is very prominent from the exterior (which were arguably are of higher quality than mass produced DSLR pentamirror crap now and enabled users to manual focus due to its precision/brightness). We can all agree optical viewfinder MF is next to impossible on Rebel class, not even sure if its easy on a 60D. Pentaprisms remember being a solid chunk of glass or crystal or whatever adds substantial weight.

I am wondering what is the source for rumors of viewfinder + touch screen interaction? Perhaps I'm dreaming, but one possible revolutionary change would be to make their anniversary 650D (remember the EOS 650 film SLR was an anniversary edition), their first mirrorless. However unlike the terrible Pentax K-01 which we know is crap in CDAF performance with existing PDAF designed lenses, and basically all it is is a K-5 with the mirror thrown out, it'd be great if Canon made an on-sensor PDAF enabled system that gave us PDAF speed + CDAF accuracy and EVF as well as touch screen instant focus and shutter release. Unlike Sony designs which cover the sensor with SLT and eats light and degrade high ISO performance, how about on-sensor PDAF, no mirror, EVF, and a mix of PDAF/CDAF technology like the Nikon 1. In addition this opens up higher performance in regards to shutter lag and FPS just as SLT does on Sony or Nikon 1's electronic first curtain shutters, etc.

One new model every year just like car. Improvement is incremental. Don't expect too much on an entry level.

The problem is they need to push forward as, in peoples eyes, they are beginning to fall behind nikon/sony in specifications.

I'm still stubbornly holding onto my 350D waiting for Canon to produce the goods....
