that the 14-50mm lens was so expensive I would bought the used L1 with it.
The camera and lens went cheaper than any of the individual lenses now on Ebay.

But my 12-60 covers the range of the Leica, is weatherproof, and the best thing about it is I already own it. I can live without the aperture ring on the Leica and save 600 bucks.

Then you are good to go (I had wondered whether you wouln't have a decent lens lying around you could stick on the L1). I became somewhat unhappy with the PL14-50 on my E-5 (AF related), and haven't replaced it yet. Enjoy the setup!

I'm not sure how he did it - it can't be that easy to get a red dot from Leica repair. But every once in a while a Leicaphile sees my L1 and does a double-take.

I had the 14-50mm. When compared to my 14-54mk I there no appreciable difference. At 100% I felt that the Oly was marginally sharper. So your 12-60 should serve you well.

I picked up an L1 off the Four Thirds Photo site a few weeks ago for less than $200. For that price it's too nice not to hold onto.

I downloaded a photo of the Leica red dot off the net. How hard would it be to print it out on some label paper and cut it out? I may try it later.

Thanks,

I meant the L1, Don't know how the c got in there since I was cutting and pasting.

I won one on Ebay. I remember holding one in Best Buy when it first came out, it was a brick, I couldn't afford it back then.
Don't ask why I bought this one 'cause I don't really need it....
The reason why I always wanted (as in "desire", not "need") the L1 (apart from the retro look) was the ability to use a proper aperture ring with a select few lenses (including my PL25mm).
The dedicated shutter speed dial and aperture ring around the lens, are great.

Ted,

How does the PL14-150 perform on the E-5? Distortion at the wide end, sharpness at the long end? I have the E-5 paired with the PL25, and am looking to expand the range.

Thomas, I don't use the 14-150 on the E5 much since the 14-35 and 7-14 tend to be glued to it. It will work the same on your E5 as your Summilux does (I use my Summilux more on the E5 than on the L1). The Vario-Elmar 14-150 is pretty much glued to the L1. Optically I would say that it's a fraction less sharp than the 14-35/35-100 combo, but that's true of all non-SHG lenses. Here's a recent photo (my cat imitating a lynx), handheld at 150mm - enlarge it all the way and take a look (let me know what you think):

I don't see distortion at the wide end but if I'm doing architecture (where it would really show up) with the L1 I tend to use the ZD 11-22. For an all-in-one zoom it's hard to beat the Vario-Elmar - you could use the 14-35/35-100 combo but only if you have a Sherpa plus $4 large to buy it.

Ted

PS: I enjoyed your Tibet photos - I'd love to get there someday especially to visit the mother monastery to the lineage of our temple here (Palyul).

I forgot to mention that I like the exposures from the L1 the most if I set it to underexpose by one-third or two-thirds of a stop.

Ted, many thanks for the assessment and the clean lynxy cat sample. It looks to be a very nice all-in-one lens indeed, bettered of course by your SHG optics. I guess the most sensible thing for me to do is add the 14-54 MKII or the 12-60 to my E-5, a) to preserve the unit as weathersealed, and b) w/o incurring additional loads for Tibetan sherpas and my bank account. I do shoot architecture a lot, and actually used the easy-going L1/Digilux 3 plus PL14-50 on quite a few locations, with satisfactory results. Here is one of those shots:

Thanks for checking out that gallery. Things have changed dramatically since those days, but it certainly is still worth a trip.

That would work and certainly it's worth chilling out the Leicaphiles who are rabid. But the red dot on my L1 is the real thing (I have owned a few film Leicas over the years). As I said, dunno how he got one of those.

I just did a search over in the Leica forum and found where you can buy a replacement badge (red dot). Apparently the "premium built" M series of the past had dots that would just fall off over time so they need replacements:

I can imagine what Leica's gonna charge for the dot.

Thanks! A mere $20 - I've spent that much replacing E-X port covers. :) But the question is, do these fall off also or did they find a better adhesive.

The Oly 25mm f/2.8 pancake lens is a natural fit for the L1, lacking only the aperture ring. Especially with a wrist strap.

Here's a sample with the pancake on the L1, wide open at 1/25th sec. and ISO 400. No stabilization of course, other than the old-fashioned way. I probably processed this from RAW. It won't win any prizes and can't be reasonably compared with a more modern camera, but it was lots of fun to carry around Quebec City and take some snapshots.

After I print out my little Leica Red Dot (have to find some adhesive backed paper), I may just print out a huge red one and paste it on my Lens cap.

But then I live in NYC and that could be dangerous. Maybe I should go with Argus......
On wait, I don't even use lens caps, hate them, they just get in the way.

Sterling, I do exactly that when I want to do street photography. Your photo illustrates that the 25mm pancake is capable of good photos and is often under-rated.

I only just now found this thread. Pretty funny stuff. :)

I've had my L1 on craigslist for a while now. I pretty much have the same setup as Ted, with the SHG glass + e-5 as my large kit (14-35, 35-100, 12-60, 50-200). But the past weekend I had shot with the L1 as backup, and I'm officially taking the L1 off the market, bcs I do find that it makes such a terrific backup camera, and I absolutely love the contrasty and rich colors, and its simplicity means that unless I'm fiddling with remote flash, or dabbling above ISO1600, I'm actually quicker with the L1.
