Does anybody have MTF data for the 17-35mm (mostly in the 20-22 range) and the Zeiss 21mm? I'd appreciate it. Center and Corner would be great. (on D3x or 800)

Nikons MTF graphs on their site are theoretical MTF based upon the design, and are only at wide open, not so useful.

Zeisses MTF graphs are from a real lens, and are more useful.

In terms of you wanting to see tests on camera bodies, you'll be best served by looking at slrgear.com, photozone.de and others, particularly those who test on a D3X. Doubt you'll see anyone running tests on the D800 just yet.

Personally, this one is not much of a contest - the Zeiss 21 is superior at 21mm. The Nikkor 14-24 is a lot more competitive.

STOP .
The whole point about an MTF chart is no camera is involved.

The value of an MTF is it tells you what a lens can achieve independent of what affect a body might have on it.
The disadvantage of MTF is it is not "real world photography".

On the other hand the Nikon full aperture MTF figures for the 20 or so Nikon lenses I own correspond to the full aperture results I get using test charts and in real world photography.

Taking an example the legendary 14-24 according to Nikons MTF is decent but not top notch (compared to just about any lens at f8) in the corners wide open - most owners who work to high standards would agree :) http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/zoom/widezoom/af-s_zoom14-24mmf_28g/index.htm

Digressing as a rule of thumb most sensors do not perform as well in the corners as the centre - having a negative effect on image file quality. While the problem is much improved with recent in camera technological improvements it does not follow MTF are an exact replica of likely real world good technique results.

Photography could be easier - if cameras and lenses came with an increase in skill button.

Actually, for once (LOL), I'd agree with you.

But the reality is that nobody has run "with lens" (as opposed to theoretical) MTF charts (meaning, as you say, without body) on these two lenses at a full range of apertures (as opposed to just wide open), and thus, since the OP seems to be "objective test" obsessed, the best I feel he will be able to do is use the D3X based tests with the two lenses on various sites to get a feel for things.

(I also would say he's better served if he could rent the two)
