tripod for 602

I am think of buying a tripod for my 602 but not sure how should i choose.
Anybody tt that purchase a tripod before could recommend me any?

Andy,

What are your needs? To use the tripod as a copy stand you may want one with a reversable column. If you need a large height range, then you will need one that has more sections and possible a small step ladder to go with it. How about shooting close to the ground than you may need one that allows the leg angles to be adjusted. Ifl you will take it back packing then you will want a light weight tripod. If you will be using it very often then consider a pro or semipro model.

I am still using a old Star-D tubular steel tripod with a reversable column, six foot height, retractable spikes and a very old fasion pan head (not fluid or fancy). The weight is in pounds not ounces (feels like tons somtimes). Sturdy and wear points are all adjustable. I've grown acustomed to it during the past 3 decades and while there may be more modern replacements out there I find it hard to dismiss something that has served me so well and long.

Just remember it does not have to be very expensive to be very good.

They come in different max heights and weights so you have to figure where you will be using it the most.

I have a middle weight that can be carried without any struggle and still goes up to 57". 3 way pan head is nice, locks on all controls, 23mm metal legs, bubble level , quick shoe, crank up center tube and built in handle.. you can get it in the $25 range if you look around...

It's a Vanguard MK-3 and serves the purpose of a traveling tripod very well for me.

Some have rubber AND spike feet, some have hooks on the center post for attaching weights to hold it firmly down (can be added to most)

There are even tripods that cost more than the S602 itself if you have a use for them.

I also have a very light weight Ambico V-0555 54" that I can use with my slave strobe units. Also inexpensive..but still has 3 way pan head and all adjustments. Light enough to attach a camera neck strap to and carry.

Both are available many places for many prices, even places like Wal-Mart and K-Mart Etc.

Next jump is to about $50 (with deal) and then a steady climb to over $500.

SLIK U8000.

Very easy to operate -- has quick flips instead of old-fahsioned threads on the legs. Has quick-release (camera shoe goes on camera and then attaches to the pod). Stable enopugh for most shots. Lightweight. Has full motion (can point camera in nearly any direction). One drawback: It Does NOT have an extender to put the camera out over a subject (for product shotting, etc.).

I am very happy with it.

Exactly. I got what I felt was a little cracker a while ago, it was half price at 15 UK Pounds at the time and has earned its keep several fold already. It can raise up taller than me, quick release legs in 2 stages and an adjustable centre stem. Fully adjustable pan/tilt head and it's very lightweight with hollow aluminium legs. For me the single best feature is the quick release head - the clip is almost permanently attached to the camera and it just clips in and out of the tripod head. And it's almost exactly the same colour scheme as my 602 so looks gorgeous as well. I have a canvas carrier for it that just slips over my shoulder.

One thing I also use a lot and cursed my husband for not popping it into the tripod bag at the weekend as requested when I realised I'd almost left it behind, is a suede polystyrene bead filled bean bag (about 7" x 5"). It's great for shots in awkward places at odd positions, such as nature macros. I SO needed it on Sunday for some star moss up a bank! I've also used a small bendy pod regularly in the past, but the 602 is too heavy for it really, so I don't risk it with this camera.

Sorry to step in, but could someone give me some pointer too ? I just ordered an S602Z (F602 in the US) and have been using a Finepix 2800 Z for many action shots of motorcycles and cars on a track:

I do have some success (not too modest, am I?) with pre-focus and trying to be smooth following the subject when at full or close to full zoom. Still, many shots are blurred and it's almost all due to motion. So I was considering buying a tripod, although I don't plan to spend very much since this is just a hobby (I tend to be riding my motorcycle at those events, then taking pics of others when I'm not riding). Most times I go around the circuit service roads on a motoryccle, which menas the easier the tripod is to transport, the better for me.

Any advices ?

I've never used one as such, but perhaps a monopod would suit your needs; allow you to swivel it around to follow your subject, but help to eliminate your own camera shake. I did some live music shots very recently, where I didn't have room at one point to open my tripod, so left it folded and propped it on my seat between my legs and it worked really well, so I would imagine an extending monopod might suit your situation.

I recently purchased a "dual-pod" marketed by Kodak Gear through Circuit City that I like. It is a fully adgustable tripod with the capability of totally removing the center section for a monopod. You can check them out on the Circuit City web site.

I agree with Boo, of the few posts I have seen of motorcycle events most of the photographers seem to be using monopods. Look around at the events you attend, what are the most successfull useing there?

Both come with ballheads and are pretty tall. The Slik one is more flimsy and weighs around 880g. It folds to ~~48cm. The Manfrotto 719B is much more sturdy and weighs 1.7kg. It folds to 52 cm.~~
