Memory Stick Pro - First Look

Better than a rumour...

Here's what they look like... right off Sony's US Website.

MSX-1G

MSX-512

MSX-256

Go to http://www.sonystyle.com and do a search for "pro" and you'll find
these listed (with no further information at this time).
Nice detective work Mark !!! So the MSPro' can't be far off now if they are already on the official website !

But the BIG question is how much are they going to cost ? Maybe that's what the delay is about - Sony marketing still trying to gauge the best pricebreak vs other recently announced memory formats.

To me the BIG question is what existing devices will be able to work with them...717?

i think it should be able to work on the 717.. that wat i read in my maunal that there might be a adpater to slot in... something like that..

i can take a pic.. but any1 can help me load it up??

Newbie :)
own 717 for 4 days

I've been waiting to see how much the price of the 128's will drop when the msPro becomes available. I'd rather have several inexpensive 128's then a 1GIG that costs many $$.

I think the workspeed of the new mem sticks also is important. 2x 128Mb won't give the same as 1x 256Mb stick. Maybe 717 with new firmware can do more than 3-burst pictures with those new mem sticks. Also USB2 can be fully used.

Can someone point me to the site confirming this rumored new firmware for the 717 to accommodate the new higher capacity memory sitcks? If new firmware was available, highly unlikely, the update would have be preformed by Sony at your expense.

My guess is that the F717 supports the Memory Stick Pro already. My manual (which is in Danish) says so! (I bought my camera in Denmark back in October.)

Instead of all these rumors flying around I think it would make for sense for people to just wait for the official announcement from Sony.

If the new MS is designed to be compatible with the F717, I kinda doubt it would need new firmware, rather than already having it built in. Sony's had this in the works for some time, and I just can't imagine them thinking, "we'll not put in the firmware to make the F717 compatible, we'll just ask those who want the new format to send their cameras back in." They will have done what will maximize sales of the new MS, which is what will make it easiest for consumers to use them: out of the box. That's my guess.

I agree. Specualtion about the new higher capacity sitcks working in the 717 could be answered on January 9th at the CES show.

I'm already in the way of getting 10 GB of capacity with only 250 EURO!...
[ X-Drive with 2.5" hard disk ]

I'm not sure about how much the 1 GB MS pro will cost, but should be around that price and up for sure!!

The only good points i can see in the MS pro, is that there is no need for swapping smaller MS so as not to loose any moment you want to snapshot, if the 128 is full by a certain moment...
and of course you can have more than 5 min HQX video!!! [around 38min]!

I am already enjoying and have benefited greatly by having my x-drive (20gb). It has given me total freedom. £156 all up from http://www.scan.co.uk during one of their specials (x-drive + 20gb HD).

I REALLY hope we have to do a firmware upgrade..maybe they can throw in an increased exposure time well over 30 seconds..that would RULE! (hey I can dream can't I)

I'm in the process of deciding on storage and want so badly to get an X-drive (technically x's-drive).

Have you had any reliability problems? Do you worry that the copy is going ok, since it has no LED to tell you that? Do you, as I've seen some suggest, make sure a copy of your "keepers" are kept on a backup form of media? (Not a very good vote of confidence for the drive, is it?).

If you have piece of mind with this unit then I'm getting one!

If you haven't done so already, you should check out Vosonics website first (www.vosonic.com) because they have announced that they will be releasing X-Drive2 soon (with LCD screen & USB2 support). If you still prefer the original X-Drive it may mean a price drop.

As for my own experience, well I bought the current model for a friends xmas present. I installed a 20GB drive without too many problems, but had a few glitches getting it recognised by his Win98SE powered notebook. Anyway in fairness once we got the drive formatted it has worked flawlessly for him - he absolutely loves its dual use for storing photos off his single 128MB MS AND as an external HD (taking work to and from his office).

Says, "The requested product is no longer available"
Were they ever available. My guest is that they are preparing to for it and that is just a default message since they don't really have any in stock. Or have they started selling yet, if so I was not aware of that. I mean they just announce earlier this week right?

That is my only big gripe with the sony is the burst mode.
