I just bought my S45 a few days ago.

(i)I have a question regarding the AF frame in Auto mode

When I press the shutter release button half way, , there are 9 green boxes appearing randomly. How does the camera decide where to focus?

(2) What is the difference between the Auto and the program mode other than I can control the flash in the program mode.

Thanks!

In Auto Mode the S45 activates AiAF. AiAF stands for Artificial Intelligence Auto Focus. The screen is analyzed by the S45 and the principal focus point(s) are chosen by the camera. If there is only one green square, the S45 focuses on that square. If the S45 chooses two or more focus points, the S45 takes an average of the multiple points and makes that the focus point.

Both Auto and P automatically choose the aperture and shutter speed. In Program you have control of much more than just the flash output setting. If you look on page 68 of your manual you will see a total of no less than 15 different settings you have control of.
  • Exposure Compensation
White Balance
  • ISO Speed
  • Bracket
  • Flash Exposure Compensation
  • Flash Output Settings
  • Flash (Flash On, Slow Synchro, 2nd-curtain flash)
  • Photo Effects
  • Continuous Shooting
  • File Format Settings
  • Light Metering Mode
  • Manual Focus
  • AF Frame (Manual Selection)
  • AE Lock
  • FE Lock
