Re: NX20, 210, 1000 - is it true you need a Samsung android phone..

I'm pretty sure you don't. Since it's Wi-fi direct, you should be able to connect with any device that can use such a connection.

Even if it was Android only, there's no reason it'd have to be a specifically Samsung made Android phone, since that has more to do with the OS than the manufacturer

to use the remote viewfinder?
This hands on suggests you can use an iPhone too, but hard to say yet, nothing has been announced regarding that.

There is an iPhone App from Samsung on the Apple site, but it looks like it isn't finished yet (all in Korean).

Now THIS is a signature.

You do not - I have tested it on a number of android devices including galaxy tabs and it works fine.

We have also tested the iphone 4s and it also works. 1st gen tablet and my iphone 3gs have issues.

It does not use WiFi direct for this feature but rather sets up a limited wifi AP (802.11x)

Thanks All.

Loring,

Can you provide details on shooting with the wifi active.

Can you shoot and have images go to your tablet as you shoot?

Or does using he wifi function lock up the camera while transferring images?

I am ready to pre-order the NX20 but need to know just how the wifi functions.

I have an HTC Wildire S smartphone. Going to the Android Market app, I only found a general app for Samsung NX cameras, that is more user manual and product marketing oriented. No word on controlling the phone remotely.

Might anyone be able to guide me, on how to point my phone to the proper download?
Thanks.

The remote viewfinder works fine on my Nexus S with the NX1000.

If you find the social sharing features (facebook, picasa, etc) don't work, make sure to get the latest firmware (1.10) which fixes a bunch of bugs).

Thanks mate. I just followed your tip, on my HTC Legend (Android 2.2) handset, however no Samsung apps appeared; only a 'generic' app from busyWWW. As it happens I don't even own a Wi-Fi camera. But this discovery triggered my finely-tuned bull$h1t detector, so I searched again, via Google Play web-store. This time the Samsung app appeared. However it refused to download, reporting that it was incompatible with my HTC device. Here's the Google Play screenshot.

So to sum up, this evidence suggests you DO need a Samsung handset to use the Samsung app.

I do not have any samsung wifi cameras, however, I can install the samsung app on both of my devices and none of which is from Samsung (HTC Sensation and HP Touchpad)

Your issue is most probably related to your device (either it doesn't have the minimum android revision or the resolution is too low) or a limitation from your provider or country.

Good info, thanks jldgomes! Your theory about device limitations is making sense to me.

OS-wise, my HTC Legend runs Android v2.2 which (theoretically) meets the Samsung app's requirements. However, my Legend's display resolution is just 320x480 pixels, which is substantially lower than the Sensations 540x960 pixels. There could be color-depth differences too. So I believe your theory.

The same here. But I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace. So it doesn't even always work with Samsung phones. It's a shame. I already asked the customer support, they told me they are working on the app and there will be an update soon. I hope so...

Any news on this?

My HTC got bricked after a few updates and app installs (won't start anymore, just hangs on the opening gif), so I bought an LG Eclypse , which has more built-in RAM at 1GB, android 2.3 , and a 320x480 screen, and I don't have permission to download onto that one either.

Any lawyers following this thread? because it is starting to look like Samsung is in infringement of a few laws... including anti-trust legislation and the Magnussen Moss act. When I bought my camera, it said it could be remote controlled, and nowhere did it say it had to be via a Samsung-branded phone... but that is what it looks like to many of us.

Checking out the user manual, I can now see:

It seems to me that if you cannot take the heat keep out of the kitchen. This is all new technology geek stuff whose usefulness is not in any way matched by the the complications of getting it all to work. This seems very much like setting up a modem in the early days which was a nightmare but now it is seamless.

I would think a class action would be mired down very quickly with the legal people not having a clue what you are talking about. It also says 'to a smartphone' and not 'any smartphone'. If it connects to a Samsung then it does connect to a smartphone. Point not proven I am afraid.

Hi,

if you go to the app webpage:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.app&hl=en

it says:

Compatible Devices
- Android version : 2.2(Froyo) or higher, display WVGA(320*480) or higher
- Supported Samsung SMART camera : WB850F, WB150F, DV300F, ST200F and other Wi-Fi applied models from 2012
( May not operate normally in some devices.)

I installed the application in my Samsung Galaxy S (ruuning cyanogenmod) without issues (I don't have a camera to test it tough), I can also try it in my wife's Nexus S or in the Nexus 10 tablet if you want.

Maybe your phone is not meeting the requirements, or your google account still thinks you have your older phone. Anyway, you can try to download it directly and install the apk file.

Cheers,

Jose

PS: WVGA is 800*480, not 320*480 so the specs are wrong. I assume they need 800*480 because the resolution of the NX cameras is at least 640*480, so in 320*480 you won't see much.

What would be the basis of the lawsuit?

Remote Viewfinder works just fine on my Motorola Atrix HD, which runs a very stock version of Android 4.1.

It's simply not the case that Samsung built their cameras so that they only talk to other Samsung phones.

It works with my iPhone, which is not Samsung, and in fact Samsung and Apple are not friendly.

The bottom line is I don't find the feature all that useful yet because it only works in smart auto mode.
