Which DC would you buy if you have 200-300 U$S?

Sony P51 - 247.00 and a great value.....2X optical zoom - 16mb memory stick included, twighlight modes for low light shooting, unlimited mode for movie shooting, multi-burst mode, gif animation, includes NiMH batteries and charger in the box....only used two batteries instead of the normal expensive and bulky 4, automatic lens cover, spot metering, AF illumination, selectable ISO - focus ranges - white balance - EV comp - sharpness......and the list goes on and on. Great value for that price..

If you can stretch it to $359 buydig has got the Minolta F100...4mp...3X optical zoom...full manual controls...takes fantastic macros and fits in your pocket. Check my link below for sample photos. I bought mine from Buydig 3 months ago when it was $327, I don't know why it has gone up so much in price.

The Canon A40. For the money, it is probably the most complete camera. I have helped two friends buy their first digicams and they are very satisfied with this camera. Highlights include:
  • Good lens with 3x optical zoom that starts at F2.8
  • Great pictures with vivid colour and nice exposures
  • Great battery life (4 AAs)
  • Selectable ISO from 50 - 400
  • Uses compact flash memory
  • Fully auto, as well as a Manual mode (!)
  • Slowest shutter speed of 15 seconds (!)
The last point is often overlooked in a first camera. Most cameras in this price range only go down to 1 or 2 seconds which severely limits your photo taking with low-level ambient lighting eg: indoor shots without flash, shots of night-lit castles or the aurora borialis.

Can you compare these two cameras and tell me which one to buy?
Canon PowerShot A40 OR Sony DSC-P51

The most important things to me for a camera sucha as Built-in Flash, Self-Timer, Optical Zoom, Optical Viewfinder and USB & Video Out... are the same on both cameras.
The Sony has rechargeable 2 AA and the Canon does not.
Canon has better optical zoom (x3) and video capable.
Resolution the same?
Please help me decide.

Thanks for all your help and previous posts.

I'm decided for the Sony P51 because it has rechargeable AA batteries and is smaller to take it with you. The resolution is the same as the Canon A40 and I don't care about movie clips (a feature the Sony does not have).

Thanks all for your advices.

The P51 does have a movie mode....it does not record sound...but it does have a movie mode with three quality levels...and something that the A40 does not have...the ability to record these movies as long as you want. The only limitation to the length of the MPEG movies that the P51 shoots is the space available on your Memory Stick. The A40 has also had a history of poor auto focus in some situations...you made the right choice!

Does the P51 include a charger?

If rechargeable batteries are all you are looking for, the A40 can certainly use rechargeable AAs, just like the Sony can. All you have to do is pick up a charger for 10 bucks. If the Sony includes a charger, and that is what you meant to say, then that’s another story. Still, I don’t think including a charger should be a deal breaker or maker - there are more important things to consider.

The P51 includes 2 AA rechargeable batteries + a charger.

The A40 comes with 4 regular AA batteries.

Maybe is not an important issue, but I prefer to save some money for buying a bigger MemoryStick.

Speaking of media, with the $10 extra you spend on a charger, you'll ceratinly make back with the cheaper compact flash cards vs. the memory sticks you have to buy for the P51.

Petteri....those reasons in the subject line of your message are
the reasons to get a P51 right?? They couldn't be reasons to get
an A40!!
The P51 has neither aperture priority, shutter priority, nor manual mode. I feel seriously limited without them. Therefore, I'd prefer the A40. That was what I meant by "controls".

But I want to use this DC to replace my small conventional one. I mean, taking family pictures, sending by e-mail, printing in small size and easy to carry it.
So, I don't think I need those manual features.

Best Buy sales guy talked me into one - even though he was out of stock.
