Hey Guys:

Wanted to know which one of these option would you think is best for both photography and filmmaking?
1.
Canon 17-40mm f4
Canon 24mm f1.4
Canon 35mm f1.4
Canon 50mm f1.2
Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro
Canon 135mm f2.8
Canon 200mm f2.8

Around $8,500

Or

2.
Zeiss ZE 21mm f2.8
Zeiss ZE 28mm f2
Zeiss ZE 35mm f1.4
Zeiss ZE 50mm f1.4
Zeiss ZE 85mm f.14

Add some AF Lenses for Photography
Canon 24-70mm f2.8
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 non IS

This option costs around $8,900

Thanks!

Zeiss...the best IQ...who cares if it's manual focus? AF is not as accurate/precise anyway and AF is just for lazy people who are in a big rush???

Sometimes (but only sometimes), there is motion in the scene and the photographer is using a shallow DOF. For those, admittedly rare, occasions AF, for some people (impatient people who can't wait for the motion in the scene to stop, or talentless people who can't manually focus moving subjects at shallow DOFs), is more reliable than manual focus.\

So, absolutely: "Zeiss...the best IQ...who cares if it's manual focus?"

If its for video the Zeiss lenses are the way to go. Great lenses and they don't breath like Canon primes when you focus.

If your talking just for stills then I do love my canon AF

I will choose
Zeiss 21
Zeiss 35 1,4 or 2
Zeiss macro planar F2
Canon 100 L IS macro
Canon 135 L
Canon 70-200 2,8 LIS 2
Canon 24-70 2,8 L 2

This would be my Zeiss line up, but on a Nikon 800E

Zeiss ZE 15mm f2.8
Zeiss ZE 21mm f2.8
Gap intentional
Zeiss ZE 35mm f1.4
Zeiss ZE 50mm f1.4
Zeiss ZE 85mm f.14 (maybe not because its covered by the next lens)

70-200 of some flavor

For Canon, I will stay with what I have.

Zeiss 15 f2.8 (possible addition)
17TSE
24TSE
35 f1.4
Zeiss 50 f1.4 (adapted)
70-200 f2.8IS

I have considered selling all my Canon gear and switching to Nikon + Zeiss. But if I just wait, I know Canon will fix the MP deficiency.

Manual focus is fine, and video is unused. I don't need zooms or AF in the shorter focal lengths.

What I see when I open the image and view it at 100% is very important to my overall attitude toward a final print. When I look at the print I know what’s there and what I had to do to get there. For me, good enough does not work.

Tough call ...

If I was doing equal parts video/stills and had to go with one or the other then probably the Zeiss ... they are such lovely examples of engineering, handle beautifully and are a pleasure to use as well as rendering gorgeous images.

For me, I expect I'll wind up with both line-ups over time, though I just returned the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 - it was really nice for $725, but wasn't up to the standard of the 50mm f/1.2 L I already had. I'd put a 50mm f/2.0 Makro there without hesistation however!

I went with the Canon 35mm f/1.4 L over the Zeiss for now primarily due to the Canon being slightly sharper wide open and it being meaningfully lighter and smaller.

I still want the Zeiss however ...

I am curious as to why you left the Zeiss ZE 28mmF2.0 off your list. Focal length, field curvature, or something else?

I am considering this lens as a general purpose wide angle to supplement my 24-70L for some light landscape duty and for people/environmental photography as well (see my previous post http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=41133345 ). I would love to hear your thoughts, as nothing looks better in the 28mm focal length to me. I just need to figure out if a manual focus lens makes sense for shooting static to slow moving people as well as for landscape shots. Also, would be interested in any guidance for alternative focusing screens for manual focus lenses because I dont anticipate using live view much at all for people shots.

Thanks - Jim

Just a focal length I don't need. I think the FL I choose cover my needs. From 24 to 35 is not a large jump. Same for 50 to 70 and for that matter from 200 to 500.

When you need wider than your widest or longer than your longest, you have a problem.
Thanks - Jim
