... the V1 is for me! I'm just a happy snapper (no pro), and have been missing a camera that would inspire me.

I had an Oly C770 superzoom that I really loved. I expected manufacturers to keep producing compacts that were as good as it was, but that didn't seem to happen. It had an EVF, and good manual controls, and great IQ, and was very well built. Anyway, I moved on to a D50 (which I still have) that I love but which wore me out with it's weight & bulk, so it has been gathering dust. Then onto a few compacts for the last few years, but the lack of RAW/IQ and an EVF really dampened my enthusiasm. So finally onto the V1. I'm not a big fan of changing lenses, but it's worth it to get the IQ that the V1 delivers in such a compact package.

I went for a little walk today with my new V1 and kit lenses, and it was a joy to use. I was really impressed with how well it camera performed, and how much fun it was to use!

The images below were processed in LR3 (which I am just learning, so hopefully I didn't do too much of a hatchet job on them - sharpening and noise reduction still remains a bit of a crapshoot to me!). Any critiques or comments are appreciated.

You are a very good photographer and you master your instrument.
Post more!

Beautiful! Thanks!

LR4 is supposedly even more impressive. I am new to it so cannot comment on the differences between it and LR3. But I like the lenses correction which can be applied. It is using the Adobe Camera Raw 7.0 so its chromatic aberration correction is said to be better. I take it that you are applying the overlay of the framing using Photoshop 7? That is a nice touch.

I notice that you are using the camera in Auto Exposure mode. I am a big fan of letting this camera do its thing until such time as you find it is in error. But frankly out of doors in (non-tricky lighting situations) it seems to be "spot on". Which is what makes me always shake my head when the question of controls is raised. The percentage of times when I feel the need to exercise control are few indeed.

My motto is "never salt your food until you've tasted it". The same applies to this camera. Leave it alone until it proves to be in error. The white balance and exposure adjustments that it makes are very good. Even in low light situations, it is usually reliable unless the subject is dashing about. Then flash becomes a necessity unless you can bring yourself to allow blurred movement.

I routinely shoot streets scenes in Downtown Chicago well after darkness and still allow the camera to make the decisions about exposure. As a "walkabout" camera capable of street shooting and even composed scenes I have little to regret from its use.

Sometimes I think we "over think" the camera control issues to the point that we border on being OCD about them. If you can step back and allow this Expeed 3 processor to "do its thing" you will be amazed. I grow in confidence of it each and every time I use the camera.

If I really and truly needed better control (i.e. more buttons, etc.) I could always simply purchase a D5100 or even a D3100 and get a bigger sensor in the bargain. I see no need to spoil the experience of walking about with this small package and getting good quality without all the fuss.

So beautiful!

Nice shots Wayne. I have noticed your posts prior to purchase and was curious as to whether you would go for it. I also have a D50 and several lenses, actually sold a second D50 and 2 lenses to buy the 30-110 and flash to go with a gift V1/10-30. I still love my ancient D50 but it sure is a load off carrying the V1 kit. Being a past Oly guy you might be interested in this inexpensive add on that I originally used on my C-700: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1058&thread=41066400
Enjoy the V1 and keep posting.

Great shots of Piper's Lagoon, it's one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon, especially Shack Island...

Really nice work....Its 90 percent you and 10 percent camera, but having said that, having a camera that makes you feel good helps to make you shoot good.

Hi Beezodog! Firstly, I want to say that I am really enjoying your posts and photos, all of which helped influence me into getting the V1 :)

Thanks for prompting me to spend yet more money lol! Actually, I was watching the below video, and I am really liking some of the changes, so the download is in process...

Thanks! I was debating if it was worth the trouble, but your comment tipped the scales :)

If you mean "matrix exposure mode", then yes indeed.
I am a big fan of letting this camera do its thing until such time as you find it is in error. But frankly out of doors in (non-tricky lighting situations) it seems to be "spot on". I totally agree! With my other cameras (including my D50), I always used spot metering. I would typically lock exposure off of the sky to get a good starting point. But I read in a review how well the V1 meters when using matrix, so I left it on that (with a - 1/3 compensation) and was quite blown away by how well it metered. Whenever I reviewed the histogram, it was looking great. And no blown highlights. Sweet! I can get used to this.

You are also right about the white balance. In my limited time with the V1, it has been spot on.

Cool :)

To me, the camera DOES have the control if you need it, just not accessible via a slew of buttons. In a way I don't mind at all. If I haven't used my D50 for a while, it takes me a while to get used to the buttons, and I don't mind that the V1's controls can be quickly found in one menu. Besides, at least the important controls like "Motion Snapshot" and "Smart Photo Selector" are on the camera body! ;) Ok, that's one brain-heave that Nikon had, but we'll forgive them that sin.

Thanks for your thoughts!

He he, a local boy! If I ever see a guy wandering around there with a V1, I deem his name to be Al lol!

Yeah, it's a great place. I love Neck point as well. Or Newcastle Island (mainly because the the Dingy Dock Pub is near by!). Lots of beautiful spots.

I haven't actually been to Shack Island though. Kayak perchance?

Thank you sir! You are so right about the camera. Having a camera like the V1, which is small, light, well built, responsive, dependable, and delivers incredible IQ, is truly inspiring. I'm so glad my buddy Bill over at FTF kept posting about it :)

Wow - to those of you whom I didn't reply directly to, thank you very much! I was expecting to get somewhat critiqued (which I always appreciate), but I will gladly take this :) I am humbled and inspired by your very kind comments. What a wonderful and supportive forum.

Very happy to be in Nikon 1 land!
