I have a 7D and I have EF-S Lenses. Canon 10-22mm and 60mm Macro, and Tamron 17-50. I also have a 70-200 2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 and 580 EX. I love using my 7D for Birds and action photography which is why even if I got a 5D I would not sell the 7D. I have been shooting a lot of landscape recently and just purchased a set of spiderlite TD-5's. With the release of the 5D Mark III the price of the of the Mark II's have dropped significantly. My friend who purchased a Mark II last year who I also bought my 7D from has offered to sell me his Mark II for 1600. There is still a warranty left on the camera and the shutter count is below 1000. My only initial investment would be a 17-40L for wide angle which I could find on Craigslist for around 550. My investment would be 2150 and I would have a premier setup. I would now have stellar quality for portraits and landscapes with the addition of the 5D, while retaining my extended reach and excellent focusing ability of the 7D. Why is it I am having such a tough time justifying this purchase? Any Comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I guess I feel like 1600 for a well maintained warrantied 5D is a great price and something I shouldn't pass up. While there are going to be 5D's out there for less money I don't think they will be this well maintained and this low shutter count. Do you think this is a good deal? Is this something I should jump on?

This is also posted in 7D forum but I felt I should get both users perspectives.

Thanks

Moe

thats a great price on a lightly used 5d2, and I honestly think there is a good chance in 4 months the camera will be worth more, as most people are done selling their camera, and canon stops selling it. then until price of 5d3 drops, even at 1800, a used 5d2 will look mighty attractive.

I have had the two cameras (5d2 and 7d) together, and they make an awesome combo.

Why would that be bad. I have both.

Yeah - I'm in exactly the same position and am having the same problem weighing up the commitment. Problem / good thing is that I can't see the downside of getting a used mkII.

I have a long lens (100-400L) for surf and sports and a bunch of wider lenses for family and friends stuff (50mm 1.4, 24-70L, 28mm 1.8, etc). Just had a play with a used 5DmkII + Grip in a shop going for $1,700 and almost sold on it but it's pretty heavily (pro) used and wanted to get an idea on shutter count first. Will take CF Card and lens in tomorrow to check (if it's still there).

The other hardship here is that I'd also consider selling the 7D (plus the only EF-S lens I've got, the 15-85: awesome lens) to trade up to a 5DmkIII, but I'd need to trade up the long lens (Sigma 120-300 + 2xTC for the 100-400L - which I might do anyway) to maintain my reach.

Probably does't help, but the head says get a cheap mkII while I can. Heart says spend ALL of my money and get the mkIII.

Lol how much for the 100-400 lol. If I sell all my gear I'm at 2300. 1200 7d 500 10-22 300 60 macro 300 Tammy. Plus 1600 = 1 camera 1 lens. That's y I thinks I'd rather keep 7d. Although I would love a mark III. I like the 7d. ESP with a 100-400.

Yup - with you on that. I'd need to sacrifice gear or cash or both. Makes the no-brainer even less of a... brainer (?).

And I know for the 120-300 upgrade I'd still need another $1,000 - $1,500 after selling the 100-400L. It would be sweet though - I'm sure I could convince myself it's the right thing to do after "saving" the money with the mkII instead of the mkIII.

5d2 and 7D is a great combo. you should sell your 10-22mm and 17-50 lenses.

and get a 17-40 or 16-35 zoom which will be ultrawide on the 5D2 and then standard on the 7D.

Also, be sure to get a prime lens - like a 50 1.4 to make your FF acquisition more worth it. Your set up could be a sleek 5d2, 7D - 16-35 2.8L , 50 1.4, 70-200 2.8L

Thanks for the replies. I deff want to get a 50mm 1.4 but it's going to be a slow process. I think I am going to sell my 10-22 and 17-50 and purchase a 17-40 and 50mm 1.4. I think that would work out great!
