Shot at ISO 6400, about 2/3 stops high key, processing ACR 6.7RC. I'm seeing small amounts of banding in High ISO, a bit below D3/D3s levels; I need to compare base ISO push to High ISO base push to see how the banding compares, but for now this is just a High ISO example.
  • Exposure +2.00 stops
  • Fill Light +40
  • Chrominance NR 25, Luminance NR 24
  • Bicubic sharper to 12MP
  • Temp = 3650+10

That's impressive but can you try the same shot at a higer iso, say 3200?

This is only a cursory check, to see how the D800's vibration fares against the D7000 in my previous test. Unfortunately my longest lens with me right now is 50mm whereas I normally use a 100mm macro at MFD. I need to also compare with and without the aperture locked (future tests).

This test is only for 1/15 and 1/30, two shutter speeds which perform poorly wrt mirror vibration on the D7000 (see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=38867006 , but this comp isn't exactly fair since I used the 100mm macro on the D7000).

Each pair is with timer-release, but the image on the left is with exposure delay off and right is with exposure delay on, so the image on the right is a proxy for MLUP.

Very good colors survival rate, better than the D7000's I'd say. I think a little desaturation plus a good Q denoise would make it quite useable, especially if it's only in part of image in shadows.

9 EV is a lot! In landscapes I only use at most 2-3EV.

Good shooting and good luck

Who needs Metering?

:-)

Yeah, I think that qualifies as very good. Both the first push shot, and the ISO 51k pet..

Thanks for the samples.

I'm not an expert but this leaves me somewhat agog.
I thought that there were only 11 levels in Ansel's "zone system."
If you can push exposure by 12 stops can you push it by 20?

I've run the D800 and 5DMkIII side by side over the last few days and the D800 continues the D7000 trend while, sadly, the 5DMkIII continues the 5DMkII's.
Thanks for sharing your efforts!

Just amazing, horshack!!! Amazing!

Really appreciate all the insight you provide into high DR and pushing shadows. Just fascinating. And, I can't wait to get my hands on a cam that will give me this capability. Even if not used routinely, it still is very valuable when needed. Thanks. -iwbs
