I have a nikon coolpix 950 for almost an year now, and it has been a faithfull partner on my photo adventures. Recently I've been having some king of malfunction on the main switch (the one around the shutter) - when I turn it to play mode it simply turns off the camera. I repeat the process several times with the camera going off, till it comes on finally. I thought it was because of the batteries, but I have achieved a AC adapter and it works the same way. This also happens in the manual and automatic mode... but mainly in the play mode. Does anyone have this problem who can give me a solution or probable cause of the malfunction??

Another question: I've tried to update the firmware for the camera in question, following the help from http://www.steve-digicams.com , using the compact flash, but when I format the card and copy the firmware to it in the root... when I put it in the camera, it doesn't recognize it?? any help for this one?

Thank you in advance,

Hi

This is exactl;y what happened to my 950 after 3 years hard work! I too thought it was a battery problem. It seemed to sort of get better but I noticed my shots were dark and out of focus a bit too often, after a couple of weeks i got the dreaded nasty clicking noise and a system error and the camera failed to work at all, it is now in for repair. I think maybe your camera took a nasty knock to cause it..I am sure ours did although my DH will not admit it!! having said that the camera has been dropped a few times over the past 3 years (almost always in it's case but that is only a little thin nylon thing after all) and has taken it all remarkably well. I think it's been a fantastic camera and am looking to maybe buy the 4500 if it is as reliable and wonderful! HTH

The Switch may be worn out; either oxidation of the contacts, contamination or abrasion. It probably needs to be replaced.
As for the Firmware down-load, try formating the CF in the Camera, then

cary it to your PC to put copy the Firmware onto it. Then take it back to the Camera to install.

You can find directions to repair the switch here:

http://www.nightskyevents.com/Nikon950repair.html

This should be fairly straightforward.

To update the firmware on a 950, you use a serial cable and the Nikon updater. You can find it at http://www.nikontech.usa - the upgrade guide is at http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/CP95013fug.pdf and explains all the steps. Use the AC adaptor if you have it, or fresh batteries if you don't, the 950 is a real battery hog for serial use.

Thank you so much for your help!!

I finally fixed the swith problem using the internet adress you gave me. It's working as new.

The firmware part I solved it with the card reader, and it's done. :)

Once again, than you so much!

Keep smiling....it will drive them crazy

I finally solved the problem following the instructions given by Keith Jewell. It couldn't be from a knock, I'm always very carefull and the camera never felt from my hands, even less from the bag I bought for her (which is quite shock absorber). It was probably corrosion or some kind of bad contact.

Like you, I'm also very satisfied with the camera, and I wouldn't sell it if I needed to buy a (more pixel) camera.

Good luck with yours

I'm so sorry... it's not http://www.steve-digicams.com , but http://www.steves-digicams.com/ . The other one just redirects you to a porn site :(. I'm really sorry for this "stupid" mistake.

Thank you Greg for the warning
