to see how it performs at f:4 and f:8 did a test shot with my EF 24-105 :

indoors, artificial light, on a tripod, timer released shutter, JPEG out of camera, 100% crop,

really had much more detail at f:8 , I am planning to do this test to all lenses I have.

Not a scientific test; but easy to do at home, and results are of my lenses.

regards

Yes, quite a difference.

Not the perfect target for proper focus. Maybe you could draw a line with a black marker on it to get a better contrast subject for AF or even MF.
Cheers,

Not the best target.

Use either a sheet of newspaper or whiskey bottles.
I use whiskey bottles because they usually have some very small print.

Check your focus using live-view if you have it.

Autofocus is neither as accurate nor as consistent as people think. This is important with very small depth of field.

I use newspaper classified ads for a target. Pay particular attention to the corners of the frame--often you can pinpoint a lens that has been knocked out of alignment because one or two corners will be radically softer than the others.

I think you will find all your lenses are sharper when stopped down 2-3 stops from wide open.

Be careful to align your setup properly before you draw any conclusion regarding your lens ! It may/will cause soft corners if the target isn't perfectly parallel to the image sensor plane !

Bit better than using clouds for a focus test; but not much!
Sharpness is mostly about resolving contrast so you need some in the picture.
High quality printing works far better as others have suggested.

Appreciative student of the late Joan Wakelin. 39+ years later still enjoying it!
