r u making $ with your camera?

John,

I spend alot of time this year looking at possible sites to use while I was waiting for my D100 to come in.................... I think there are others that are good also, photoreflect isn't perfect but it seems to be working.

I really wish they had a option for a better quality sample photo, ISO3200 photos look really bad and when I have them printed they look very good.
Geez...I wish you had told me that LAST year when I started paying
NikonPro!!!

Seriously though, after reading your post, I switched my service
over to Photo Reflect. I've already created the new storefront and
cancelled my Nikon Pro account. The new site,
http://www.johnricard.photoreflect.com should be active by Monday.

Thanks for the info.

No. I don't run errands on my bike, it's my hobby. Photography is my profession. It's very competitive out there. Over the long term, the hobbyist printing and selling photos at events to try and pay for their new toys are driving prices and profits into the ground for the full timers.
Why is it that people always feel that they have to try and recoup
their money on photography equipment? It's a hobby just like
anything else. I ride motorcycles but I didn't start a motorcycle
business to recoup the expense of my new bike.
If somebody were to ask you to run errands for them on your bike,
eventually you would want to charge something, wouldn't you?

Oh dear poor you - I'll stop right away... NOT

Stop complaining and get so good that you dont need to worry about us amateurs.

Or is being professional mean you look down your nose at others?

I read about this on another forum. The so called amature cameras are getting so good that alot of professionals are losing money. For me it's a hobby and a passion and if I can make money more power to me. It's just not the cost of the camera. It's the ink and paper and printer wear and tear or are we to eat the cost of that also.

Blue,

Nope - others had done it before, but I dont think anyone has posted their mugshots in the sig before.

I like it (I dont use it all the time) but use it sometimes to personalise my post. I reckon it's good to see the persons face - ugly as that may be!

I kept the image simple therefore -> small GIF (3.5 k) so it wont impact download speeds.

best wishes,

This place can be dangerous

The more time I spend here, the less time I spend in the creative
area - and with $$ paying customers.

NG's are horribly addictive and can be a real curse.

Assuming Phil's convoluted session key system doesn't get in the way, your embedded face image should end up in users' cache, and not have to be downloaded every time they view a post from you, if you post frequently.

No - because it´s my hobby!

I have a job to earn money - I can spend for my hobbies. If I would earn money with photography it would become a profession and I would loose my wonderful waste of time and money.

No Peter, I never look down my nose at someone just because they aren't a "professional." What a stupid question. It's pointless to argue this point with you. You don't keep food on your family's table working in this industry. Until you do, you will not understand.

I get press passes & photo vests, at the west coast CART events, I
attend, from a website, I photograph for. I get to go places I
couldn't get to, when I was buying tickets, to the events. I get
closer to the action & I don't have chain link fencing, in my
pictures, anymore. I also got a ride, around Laguna Seca, in a pace
car, last year. Some, wouldn say, I don't get paid, but that lap,
was priceless.

Jeff
Jeff which website are you shooting for, I have shot for 3 different ones this year, I shot at Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Elkhart Lake, and Fontana. I have never had so much fun merging two of my hobbies. Out of curiosity how did you land the pace car lap. Feel free to e-mail me gbreckley_at_aol.com (replace the at with @ obviously)

Interesting responce below! u sound annoyed with this subject.

1st let me say i am a full time student (back to school at 37yr) & yes my major is Photography. So enough about taking bus from the pros. eventually i hope to be able to make a carrer change into photography.as far as im concerned everyone is etitled to the right to ATTEMPT to make money! To answer your question below: forget about money! who here would not LOVE to be able to tell people/friends that they have sold picures or have been published in a paper, magasine...? that would just make you proud!

Yes it is a hobby, but what is wrong with making $, if u can? if i thought i could make $ riding my bike (by the way another expensive hobby, but not as ncikle & dime as photography. i have a zx9) i would try.

Aslo, thanks to everyone with all your responces, its really apreciated! & very interesting.
If there is an area of photography that you really enjoy you can
make some money part time with it. I really youth sports
photography, I have a football and wrestling son and a softball,
soccer, basketball daughter. I helped justify the cost of new
camera equipment by taking a few extra sports photos of kids and
sell them for a resonable price. This is an area that there may or
may not be someone (read pro) doing in your area. I am not trying
to step on toes or put a full-time photographer out of business. I
have only looked at sports and clubs or leagues were there is no
one doing it. Most money in youth sports is made in the team photo
business which to me would be just another job. I prefer the
action photo side of things as it is a much greater challenge and
something that most parents can't do themselves. My business is
setup as a legitimate business, I pay sales tax and income tax. I
haven't paid for my D100 and lenses yet but I am getting pretty
close. My goal is to simply cover the cost of new equipment that I
want to buy. A second goal is to get my kids interested and try to
do some of the photography themselves and also learn about small
business.

I have thought of this! i figure thes equestrian people have $ & i would probably be able to charge a decent price for some good pic's? U rune one, but how would someone like me get into it. vauge question i know.

i mean, should i just buy a ticket & then take pic's, or should i contact someone running it & ask about setting up a booth to sell pic's???
My wife and I run an equestrian centre. I take pictures at the
competitions ( one day each weekend ). I print them out on my Epson
2190S and sell them in various sizes.

I am also getting very good in photoshop and started doing digital
makeovers for people.

Have a look at http://www.soleyphotos.com , the site is not complete, and
click on the Beaver button or the Jess Wildder button and see some
samples of the things I have been taking. When you click on the
Beaver button the person rising the horse is me :)

Cheers

Peter

I'm all for people who have the passion for getting into photography full time, or even part time. My problem is with the armatures that are merely trying to pay for their toys and have no real commitment to the profession or business.

We were doing an equestrian event a while back, shooting for clients, handing out cards, etc. Some $#$% with a point-n-shoot trying to recoup his $500 walked around behind us offering prints for almost nothing knowing that we were there trying to do business. Guess he was trying to raise money for a new neck strap or something. We spend a lot of time at events networking, making our name known, forming relationships for other events, etc. Armatures trying to make their $500 back on their new toy in some cases really mess it up for those that are trying to make a living at it.

Your point is well made but dont let this one moron who blatantly tried to infringe on your bus jade you to all the ametures!
