Hello!
It's my first post here.
I'm new to photography, bought my first DSLR just recently.

This one was taken near Emerald Lake in Poland. Spring has started :)
This toad helped me to understand 2 important things about my camera and lens:
1) NEVER take pictures with aperture wide open - it looks just wrong.

2) When taking pictures of very small objects, it is better to focus manually in Live View rather than relying on AF, because it doesn't always hit exactly where you want (viewfinder and even LCD screen can fool you).

Lens used: DA 18-55 WR

I'll be happy to hear your opinions.

Good shot. But your assumption:
1) NEVER take pictures with aperture wide open - it looks just wrong.
is not right. Wide open aperture helps to isolate your subject from background.

Good luck

I've meant that shooting wide open doesn't work for me with my kit zoom - I can never get satisfying sharpness this way.
Not completely surprising - especially at 55mm and relatively close focus (as per your shot) - a known weakness of the 18-55 kit lens. There are lots of reasonably priced improvements you could consider...

Nice shot of the toad by the way!

Best wishes

In certain situations it could be advantagous to have a camera though useful egronomic, with all buttons placed correctly appeared to the casual observer to be a Toad. The Toad Cam ! New concept camera, lets sell the idea to, Samzung!

Image gallery title bar? Where? How can I get there? I have just been, repeatedly, led to a page where I can UPLOAD my pictures...

Awesome! Although personally I would have gone for a tighter crop to bring out the wonderful grittyness of his hide compared to the beautiful glossyness of his eye.

Thank you.

Although not impossible, getting any closer would be very difficult. First - I was testing toad's patient quite a bit, second - kit zoom doesn't focus in very close distance (and highest available focal length was used).

Well done, especially with the kit lens. I also found it very difficult to use the kit for such photos. Therefore I went for a Sigma 105 macro for toads, bugs and reptiles, which is my sharpest lens by far. AF adjustment on the K20 was a pain, but now it works even wide open. AF on your K5 should do much better than my old K20.

I use the macro very rarely, but still worth getting one. However, I regret the Pentax 100/2.8 WR Macro wasn't available when I bought the Sigma ...

Thanks.

That's nice! But I can't help but to wonder how would it look when shot with narrower aperture (and higher ISO), so more details would be revealed.
I love the lighting though, gives nice impression. And it's really sharp.

Yes, would have been better. But ISO 1600 is the maximum for the K20 and 1/90s already requires SR to avoid blur. Jealousy looking at the K5 ... ;-)
