As reported by me in this thread: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1037&message=40965199

It is likely we will see many lenses updated by Sony sooner than we thought. I have checked the new pricing from Hongkong and many lens now is cheaper than HGK SRP price, where usually in my country it is cost 20-30% more expensive.

The store also said they run out stock of a77 and can't order it again for some time.

Logic dictates that sony have to renew a lot of their current lenses for two different reasons.

Firstly at the high end they are producing weather-proof bodies, which require weather-proof lenses. To date the only such lens is the 16-50 f2.8 kit lens, perhaps also the G lenses.

Secondly at the lower end (and this is a bit more speculative) if it's true that they are going for in-lens AF motors then many of the current aps-c line up will need replacing, including the CZ1680.

Sadly they have been producing weatherproof bodies for a long time, it has never been an argument for Sony to produce the lenses to go with that.

It would take away a big issue in the lineup for the more serious photographers though.

It seems to take a long time for lenses to get redesigned.

Sure the less costly ones get redone, but the cool ones that you really want rarely get redone. I doubt the 135mm F1.8 will get redesigned any time soon, but it should be. As well as others.

Sony is aware of this, but you can't redo everything at once.

I was in the SonyStore in Langley on Monday.... no 16-80 to be seen. That lens would be great if they could do an update on the focus issue... I hate to say it, but my repaired lens has died again (shades of Walt???) I am awaiting the techs result to decide what I will do.

I am looking at maybe the Sigma 18-250 which David K likes. Kind of hard finding someone in this neck of the woods who carries the Sony version. Sigh!

My next alternative, is to change camera brands... maybe to Pentax with a Sigma lens... but the results with the 16-80 kind of spoiled me to other lenses. Double Sigh!!!

Or, third... just give up on DSLRs and wait till they get the bridge cameras as responsive as I am used to with the A700. :)

I hear you. The only lens that I really needs in current line up is 85 f/1.4 (then perhaps 35 f/1.4) but I prefer it is SSM. Hopefully it gets redone after the 70-400 and 70-200, along with 135 f/1.8.

I think Sony needs more easy choice prime lens for FF like 35 f/1.8, 50 f/1.7 instead of just offering APS-C.

My 16-80 is still running, but I mostly don't use it much. Yes a redo on the 16-80 would be nice to see. These days I'm using the Tamron 18-270 instead and it's pretty good.

Just got a new Sony HX200v, Sony's latest bridge camera. A lot faster than older ones, especially the contrast detect AF, but not competitive with my a700s. I was out on a photography foray over the weekend with both. It's better than the HX1 it replaced, but it's still a bridge camera.

Also appears to be Sony's test bed for new "features" that will turn up in SLT. The HX1 was like that.

I suppose SOME new lens is imminent, but MY new lens is just a dream: 16-105mm G, SSM, F/2.8-4.5. FF, Weather sealing, 62mm filter, did I leave anything out?

Now that one would be on my list. But then make it 2.8 all the way.

sony needs a 24-120 f4 lens like nikon.. It would be a good kit lens to sony a99 (24-105 if it cant e sharp at long end)
I'm talking about a high quality lens for APS, not FF, though it's perfectly ok if it covers FF, obviously. Thus the 16-120. And if Sony could not design that range sharp all through the range, they should give up making lenses.

I'd prefer a longer focal range at the top end. At least 120mm, probably more.
A few years ago I was a vacation and took maybe 1500 pictures, all with a Tamron 18-250mm lens and then used Exposure Plot to find that 90% of my shots were at 120mm or less. And when I went over 120mm it was usually WAY over.

The surprising thing is that just over 30% of my shots were at 18mm. That information caused me to buy an UWA lens and not worry too much about anything very long.

Equally well I could say: if you can't afford it in the first day of release you should give up photography.

IMO such lens wouldn't have much point. Especially when we got 16-105 and 18-135 is on the way with A37.

I would much more prefer useful lenses that we haven't seen new for quite some time now than YET ANOTHER walkaround zoom.

35mm, 50, 85 f/1.4, 135 f/1.8, tele-zooms, 50, 100 and new 150 macro, UWA, new aps-c WA prime (sub18mm) - all could use new versions at least with SSM if not SSM and watersealing. Yep, not many ppl will buy these, but such lenses are a reason why people invest in A77 or higher tier cameras.

Well, they probably could today, but the price would put it out of almost everyones price range. I know I would like such a lens, but I realize that I could never cough up the $5000+ for it.... assuming it is the f:2.8, and ultra sharp that you mentioned.

20 years ago, everyone would have laughed at you for suggesting that someone even try to build one.....

You are right. The camera makers have to have one or two, oddball lenses that makes their name. Maybe they wouldn't sell well, but they could make the reputation of a manufacturer if they are superlative.... and then have a couple of "close, but cheaper" lenses to sell beside them.

Not many people buy the Canon 85mm f:1.2 lenses, but you can bet that most Canon users are aware of the lens, and how good it really is (yeah, limitations in some ways, but still damn good, and better than anyone else has. It is kind of a statement lens that says, "We provide everyone with what they dream of having in the way of camera lenses!" I don't imagine Canon makes a lot on those lenses, but they do keep up their reputation.
